NORMAN, Okla. — Carl McAdams
continues to amaze Oklahoma foot-
, ball fans and Sooner opponents with
I his defensive excellence.
In the third quarter Saturday
against the Missouri Tigers, the ju-
nior from White Deer, Texas, be-
came a one-man gang as he rose
to stop three consecutive plays of
hard running. On the first play, Mis-
souri quarterback Gary Lane swept
the Oklahoma right end, but McAd-
ams come in fast to jolt the Tiger
after a two-yard gain.
Then Missouri’s speedy halfback,
Charlie Brown, swept the opposite
wing, but McAdams wrestled him to
the ground for no gain.
Finally, Lane tossed a pass. But
McAdams made an incredible in-
terception of what looked to be a
certain completion, returning for 14
yards to give the Sooners an excel-
lent scoring opportunity from the
Tiger 31.
His play caused Lane to say later
in the Missouri dressing room, “I
think he’s a great football player.
He’s smart and seems to hold their
defensive unit together. You can’t
believe how fast he is. I know our
guy was wide open (on McAdams’
interception) when I threw the ball,
but McAdams came from some-
where. The ball was two feet from
the receiver’s hands. But he got it.”
When the going got rough, the 6-
foot 4-inch, 208-pounder lowered his
head and blasted through. Gomer
Jones, Oklahoma’s head football
coach, commented jestingly on his
Sunday TV show, “We will have to
change McAdams to fullback next
year the way he ran on the play.”
Defensively, McAdams was cred-
ited with an unbelievable 13 unas-
sisted tackles, 4 assisted tackles, a
pass interception and fumble recov-
ery. He also set up the Sooners’ sec-
ond touchdown, forcing Missouri
fullback Carl Reese to fumble. Ok-
lahoma end Allen Bumgardner re-
covered.
In eight games this fall, McAd-
ams intercepted three passes, re-
turning them 50 yards, and recov-
ered three opponents’ fumbles.
Missouri Coach Dan Devine also
echoed the Tiger praise for this
White Deer standout when he was
asked what Oklahoma players gave
Missouri the most trouble. “I think
it has to be Grisham ...” Then he
interjected, “And I thought McAd-
ams played real well.”
Big Carl played his football in
high school for Coach Colie Huff-
man at White Deer where he made
Texas All-State in 1962. A fullback,
he captained the team in 1962.

White Deer Gets
Rain As Streets
Recall Memories
It’s wet and wonderful- But — it
is without a doubt the nastiest,
messiest and sloppiest rain in a
long time. Now local residents are
having a taste of what White Deer
streets were REALLY like to travel
in the early 1920’s — before paving.
Rain amounts received from the
rains of the past week up until Wed-
nesday morning averaged 2 inches
or more. Reported to The News
were the following amounts: Lawson
Shaw about 2”; Vernon Werth 2:10”;
Ernest Dupuis 2.35”; Buisz Urban-
czyk seven miles south 1.45”; Eddie
Kalka northeast of town 2” up to
Monday night.
Leon Nicholson reports that in the
past three weeks he has received
more than 6” at his farm northwest
of town.
$1800.00. Out of this figure will come
the necessary expense of putting on
the Carnival — the payment for
prizes and food that was purchased.
W. J. Stubbliefield and Henry Ur-
banczyk were the winners of the
dressed beef given away by the
Lions. Winners of valuable prizes at
the bingo stand were numerous. Boss
Lion Ray Schultz expressed thanks
to the many ladies and persons who
donated cakes and pies for the event
who were not Lions or wives of
Lions. The mothers of Little League
baseball players were especially
helpful.
Next spring the Lions will hold a
Spring Carnival. The Hava Java
Manufacturing Company of White
Deer has donated a coffee dispens-
ing machine to be given away at
the Spring Lions Carnival.
