8th grade rolls to victory;
7th grade falls to pressure
By Guv Burleson
The Brundrett Middle School boys’

Incarnate Word Academy on Mon-

at Port Aransas High School.

ing their record to 2-7, and the eighth
grade won 40-47. putting their record
at 13-1.
The seventh graders did a good job
against their nemesis. The Press, in the
First half, leading 16-15 at halftime,
but fell apart under the relentless pres-
sure in the third quarter, falling behind
byasmuchas 12, before closing to the
final margin.

eight, followed by Will Ulch with
seven, including a three-pointer. Ulch
led in rebounding with five, followed
by Zack Holcomb with four. Ulch and
Justin Gonzales each had two assists,
and Nick Magee led with three steals.
Coach Guy Burleson says, “We did
a much better job against the press for
a while and it kept us in the game, but
one bad stretch doomed us. We dug a
hole we couldn’t dig out of.”
. H
In the nightcap, Burleson said “It
was a 17 man win. We (the eighth
graders) wore them down with our
depth."

half, with the Marlins trailing 17-16at
halftime, but the Good Guys wore
them out in the second half, building a
three-point lead in the third quarter,
and stretching it out tp 12 before the
end.
“At halftime I told them we had
them where we wanted them. They are
tired, and we’ll catch them in the third
and beat them in the fourth. We cut
down on turnovers and tightened up
on the boards and all went according
to Hoyle."
Individually, Steven Amaya led in
scoring with 13, including the only
three-pointer, and rebounding with 12.

Two key victories were posted last
week by the Port Aransas High School
Marlins, moving them up in state and
area rankings.
An 88-45 win over Ben Bolt on
Friday, Jan. 26, and a 78-68 victory
over Bruni on Tuesday, Jan. 23, were
important to the Martins, but for dif-
ferent reasons.
Coach John Grammer said the Ben
Bolt win was significant because of
the Marlins’ execution of their half-
court offense, necessary to their con-
tinued success in the play-offs. The
winover Bruni was important because
it represented • big win on the road
under adverse conditions.
The wins propelled the Marlins up-
ward in the state rankings. The team is
now ranked No. 3 in the stale in Class
1A by the Texas Association of Bas-
ketball Coaches, up from No. 4. The
Corpus Christi Caller-Times ranks the
Marlins No. 2 in the area among all
size schools, and Kill-Channel 3 tele-
vision in Corpus Christi puts the team
at No. 5 in the area.
The Marlins took on what they an-
ticipated would be their toughest com-
petition in the district in a game last
night(Wediiesday, Jan. 31). Kingsville
Academy’s Pride came to town to
keep their 4-0 district record clean.
(The game was originally scheduled
for Tuesday,Jan. 30, but it was changed
to Wednesday.)
“This looks to be our competition). I
for the district championship. Thisisg 04
