Birds herald change of seasons
1 The first one weighs in at 3/4 of an
ounce. The other one is 2,700 times
beerier re 125 pounds. Both are log-
gerhead sea turtles, and both «e at the
UTMSI Turtle Palace. The tiny one is
a hatchling from a nest discovered on
the beach in Port Aransas, which I
wrote about in last week’s column.
The big one is not even fully grown.
Loggerheads may reach 400 pounds
as adults. This one was found in La
Quinta Channel near Ingleside by
Texas Parks and Wildlife biologists,
and brought here by Padre Island Na-
tional Seashore personnel. It bad been
seen floating listlessly re the surface
for the past two days. Part of its left
front limb is missing. The wound has
healed, but still looks a little red. We
will keep it under observation for die
next few days in case it has some
infection, and then release iL The dif-
ference in their sizes is extraordinary.
Hopefully IT1 have a picture for next
week’s columdp^;,f|^>Kvi.fsh,iv
