283 Cases This Year:
Precautions, Symptoms Of Polio
Listed By State Health Officer
During the first five and one-
half months of this year, 283 cases
of poliomyelitis have been reported
to the Texas State Department of
Health. Dr. George W. Cox, State
Health Officer, has issued the fol
lowing- suggestions concerning the
disease and its control.
“All the methods of transmitting
the disease may not be known; how-
ever, sufficient information is at
hand to demand certain precautions
and these include personal hygiene
and campaigns for sanitation im-
provements.
“Stringent efforts should be
made to eliminate house-flies, mo
squitoes, and rodents and to destroy
their breeding places. Every ef-
fort should be made to institute
approved garbage collection sys-
tems, and secure safe water sup-
plies. Where adequate municipal
sewage disposal systems are not in
operation, it is necessary to install

A regular meeting of American
Legion Post No. 77 has been sched-
uled for next Thursday, July 5, at
8 p. m. at the Legion Hall, 5505
Kelvin Drive, it was announced by
Charles Drnek, post commander.
A nominating committee, which
includes E. W. Deckman, Shelley

year. The committee was elected

of the local post.
On the evening’s agenda is also
a regular social hour.
and maintain sanitary septic tanks
and outdoor privies.
“All raw foods and vegetables
should be washed thoroughly before
use and protected from filth and
insects. All food handling estab-
lishments should adhere strictly to
the state law concerning the sterili-
zation of dishes and utensils. Those
restaurants with insufficient per-
sonnel to maintain approved sani-
tation, should close one or two
hours a day so that employees can
assist in maintaining cleanliness
and high sanitation standards.
“Over-exertion in children should
be avoided. Children should not
visit homes where there is ill-
ness. Early symptoms of infantile
paralysis are headache, fever,
vomiting, drowsiness, followed by
stiffness in the neck and back.
When suspicious symptoms appear,
a physician should be called im-
mediately.”

Too Complete
“What is she so angry about?”
asked the puzzled bridesmaid. “The
paper gave a full account of her
wedding.” “It certainly did,”
agreed the maid of honor with a
giggle. “It even mentioned the fact
that she was married to the well-
known collector of antiques.”
Members of the Southwestern
section will again have the oppor-
tunity for a chest X-ray, this time
by the Houston Anti-T. B. League’s
new $25,000 mobile unit.
X-rays will be offered on Friday
from 2 to 7 p. m. at Weingarten’s
Store No. 15, located at 2512 Uni-
versity Boulevard. League offi-
cials said that anyone from the
age of 12 on may be X-rayed.
Although it is not mandatory if

be asked to donate 50 cents and
each child will be asked to donate
25 cents to help defray the expenses
of the new machine.

Avenue A Topping Loses On Second
A San Diego sailor passed away
and upon arriving at the gates of
eternity remarked, “Gee, I never
thought Heaven would be so much
like California.”
“Son,” said the man at the gate
sadly, “this ain’t Heaven.”
Bids were opened on two paving
projects at the Bellaire council
meeting last Wednesday night and
a second attempt to surface North
Avenue A was defeated.
A delegation representing resi-
dents living near North Avenue
was led by Charles G. Gribble Jr
R. C. Suggs and Norman Gauerke
The sentiment of the group was
apparently in favor of having the
thoroughfare topped now rather
than waiting for possible concrete
paving.
County Commissioner R. Kyle
Chapman has offered labor and
equipment for the topping project
if the city would provide materials.
Estimated cost of the materials
needed to provide a nine-inch com-
pacted base and a heavy asphalt
rock and gravel surface is $7,050.
The asphalt-surfacing motion
dropped in a 3-to-3 deadlock. City
Engineer Joe Noser is preparing
cost estimates for concrete paving
Avenue A and several other
thoroughfares.
Two Paving Jobs
Mischer-Harris Company was low
bidder on two residential paving
projects. Their price was Avenue
B from Laurel to Bellaire Boule-
vard is $8,698.37, while their figure
for the 4800 and 4900 blocks of Wil-
low is $13,656.97.
The city engineer also informed
the council that the new water well
near the intersection of Avenue B
and Old Richmond Road is ready
to be put in service but needs a
starter for the pump.
Extend Lines
In other business last Wednesday
night, the city fathers approved ex-
tending sanitary sewer lines and
water lines to Holy Ghost School,
which is now under construction
just wbst of the city limits, on the
basis that more than 90 per cent
of the students live inside Bellaire.
At a special meeting held Friday I
night, they voted an amendment to
the ordinance covering the July 14
municipal election, making R. B.
Melanson judge of precinct 128,
R. R. Reamer assistant judge, Mark
Anthony Freeman assistant judge,
Mrs. Charles G. Gribble Jr. a clerk
and Mrs. M. King Hubbert a clerk.
To keep within a budget these
days you have to let the rest of the
world go buy.
