(Editor’s note: The following
story was written by Miss Clara
Alice Marley of 5906 Fordham,
volunteer public relations director
for the West University-Bellaire-
Southside Civil Defense Program.
Miss Marley was one of only 10
persons who attended a Disaster
Relief Sanitation School sponsored
by the Harris County Health Unit.)
Representatives attending the
Civil Defense and Disaster Relief
Sanitation Aid School were com-
mended highly by Harris County
Health Unit Director L. D. Farra-
gut. Public health problems whicn
arise under disaster situations such
as hurricanes or explosions and em
ergency wartime problems of water
sources and treatment, garbage and
waste disposal, and possible intro-
duction of deathly plague through
rats were discussed and the pres-
ent health facilities and methods of
the communities represented were
reviewed.
The frequency of emergencies in
this part of the country, particular-
ly hurricanes, was noted and the
magnitude of confusion resulting
from the Texas City disaster was
cited as evidence to encourage ef-
ficient organization and thorough
training of volunteers in the Civil
Defense Health and Emergency
Medical Service.

probably be made up of three in-
strument men and three men who
will serve as recorders or runners,
if necessary. A city of 250,000 pop-
ulation would require 75 teams,
some of which would be held in re-
serve for replacements, others
would make area surveys, and the
remaining teams would be assigned
service work directing salvage, res-
cue and fire work.
Sabotage methods affecting pub
lie health and welfare were intro-
duced several times throughout the
series of lectures. A review of the
school’s proceedings and recommen-
dations given has been filed at the

Line Extension To
City Sewage Plant
West University Commissioners
plan to save between ,$250 and $300
on the operation of the city’s as-
phalt plant next year.
The group voted to request Hous-
ton Natural Gas Company to ex-
tend a gas line to the sewage dis-
posal plant area in order to use
natural gas for the heating process
rather than kerosene. Maintenance
will be less, it was pointed out, by
use of gas. Price of the new sys-
tem would be 35 cents per 1,000
feet.

"PLEASED CUSTOMERS — PROPERLY FITTED"
“Too many citizens are waiting
on the other fellow,” seemed the
consensus of both instructors and
attending representatives. The
school was set up to handle ap
proximately 75 trainees and less
than 10 persons attended each of
the six sessions. The school was
postponed two weeks from the first
announced session because of seem-
ing apathy of lack of attendance.
The date change was made despite
the heavy schedules of the experts
who were to present the course in
order that a second chance might
be given communities failing to
send representatives.
Radiological contamination prob-
lems were disclosed and equipment
