Sewer Contract Let
By Beliaire Council
Members of the Beliaire city
council held a mayor-less meeting
in the Civic Center last week.
Jack Lawler, mayor pro tern,
conducted the session in the
absence of Everal L. West, who
was on vacation in Oklahoma.
Discussion at the meeting cen-
tered around awarding a contract
to the Trimm Construction Com-
pany on laying a storm sewer for
the 4600 block of Cedar; Cost of
the improvement has been set at
$6,931.25.
In other matters of the eve-
ning, the council awarded a con-
tract to the Water Tank Service
Company for painting the Thside
of the new water tank on South
Avenue A. The company, repre-
sented by W. M. Fink of 3810
Swarthmore has agreed to do the
job for $487.
W. J. (Bud) Ward and M. F.
Carmean, spoke for the fire de-
partment in requesting the pur-
chase of an additional truck.
Greater Houston was well-represented in Asheville, North Caro-
lina recently at the Parade of Quartets sponsored by the SPEB-
SQSA, Inc., Barbershop Quartets. Pictured above are three of the five
members of “Four Flats and a Sharp,” all of whom traveled to the
southeastern state as guests of Reuben Robertson, chairman of the
board of the Champion Paper and Fibre Company. Left to right are

Hold Luncheon Meet
Circle Number 1 of the Woman’s
Society of Christian Service of the
West University Methodist Church
met recently in the home of Mrs.
W. II. Sims at 3619 Pittsburg.
Serving with Mrs. Sims as co-
hostess was Mrs. Fred Gray, Jr.
Guest speaker was Mrs. Roy John-
son, a Texas Conference officer
and a recent past president of St.
Members of the Pemberton Gar-
den Club will begin their fall sea-
son activities at 10 a. m. next
Wednesday, September 6, accord-
ing to an announcement of plans
by the 1950-51 president, Mrs. Rob-
ert F. Sabom of 2700 Fenwood.
Hostess for the first fall meet-
ing will be Mrs. R. E. Houser of
2723 Carolina Way, and co-hos-
tesses will be Mrs. A. B. Fisk and
Mrs. J. Ross Wright. Coffee will
be served before the meeting and
program begin.
Guest speaker will be Mansell
Allen, who will talk on the sub-
ject of “What Your Garden Might
Be.” Mrs. W. M. Crumpler will
bring a fruit arrangement.

Recreation Student Talks
At Thursday Night Meet
Members of the Beliaire Recrea-
tion Association held a meeting
last week following a family night
which marked the end of the citp-
wide summer recreation program.
At the meeting, Mrs. Noyes Smith,
representing the city parks and
recreation board, paid tribute to
the paid staff and volunteer work-
ers in the summer program.
Speaker of the evening was John
Plumley, Beliaire resident, who re-
viewed his thesis on a year-round
recreation program. Mr. Plumley
is a graduate physical education
student at the University of Texas.
