Abbott-Stansell Shorthorns Lead
Little League At Coca-Cola Field
By J. TAYLOR GIBBS
At the end of the fifth week of
league play at Coca-Cola ball park,
the Abbott-Stansell Shorthorns
were leading in the Little South-
west circuit, with the Coca-Cola
Sprites, Dugan’s Indians, and the
Failing Drillers tied up for sec-
ond place.
In the 6:30 game on Monday,
July 2, the Failing Drillers racked
up 10 runs in the last inning to
win from the stunned Dugan In-
dians, 12 to 7. Trailing 2 to 7
in the last inning, the Drillers
exploded with four hits, taking full
advantage of five bases on balls
and a couple of errors by the
Indians. David Smith, Indian pitch-
er, left the mound while Steven
Zax attempted to halt the rally,
but the Drillers were not to be
denied their big inning.
In the 8:30 tangle the Hughes
Cubs crushed the cellai’-dwelling
Tellepsen Builders, 14 to 0,
the Cubs’ Howard Ranft pitched
the season’s first no-hitter, with
the backing of an errorless in-
field.
Setting i
14 hits in
new league record of
one game, the Sam
iera
ild
Montgomery Athletics nevertheless
lost to the Arraco Steelers, 9 to 7, mi, clmlmIwr or int,rMted ,ald
in the early game last Friday «rty. or any of the matter* herein
night. Although they got only five tio^ that:
hits, the Steelers made the most
of 10 walks and eight errors by JJjJ
the Athletics. Norman Thompson “
sparked the Athletics with five
hits for five times at bat.
In the 8:30 tussle, the Coca-
Cola Sprites wree bumped out of
first place by the Abbott-Stansell
Shorthorns in a close 4 to 3 game.
With The Sprites leading 3 to
in the sixth, the Shorthorns tied
the score with a squeeze play,
scoring Brooks, and Jimmy Brock
put it on ice by driving in the
winning run with a long double to
center field.
Southwest area residents could
hardly find more excitement or en-
tertainment than that which goes
on at the Coca-Cola diamond on
Bissonnet every Monday, Wednes-
day and Friday night. We have
seen' quiet-spoken mothers turned
into rabid baseball fans, complete
with ball-park lingo and a pen-
chant for the umpire’s scalp. The
Little Southwest League and the
Coca-Cola Bottling Company have
issued a standing invitation for
one and all to come out and watch
these youngsters battle it out. The
admission is free and, incidentally,
this is the only ball park we’ve
ever seen where you can buy
coke for a nickel.
