Sweetwater is a city on the rise, and city and county
officials are exploring options on how to improve the
historic downtown as well as the newer areas that have
sprung up along the Interstate 20 corridor. Students
from Texas Tech University gave a presentation at Java
Jax coffee shop Monday afternoon before a crowd of
local officials on the potential development of the city.
For the purpose of the study, the town was divided
between Sweetwater North and South, with the division
of the two being the train tracks near Lamar Street and
Broadway. The theme for the northern part of town, is to
integrate the existing downtown with new residential
areas and businesses. Vibrant colors smattered through-
out the downtown area, and a biking and walking path
which would run parallel to East Third Street were some
thoughts expressed on how to improve its appearance.
The south side theme was mainly to expand shopping
and create more tourist attractions, as well as make the
area easier to navigate via pedestrian travel. A prome-
nade where nightlife could be enjoyed was suggested, as
well as an open-air outlet mall and additional dining
opportunities.

Youth ail on
display at library
BY AMANDA MORENO
Staff Writer
March is Youth Art Month and the Nolan County City
Library is having an art exhibit display of different pieces
from area students.
There are about 45 pieces that are on display in
Sweetwater, and there are also numerous pieces on dis-
play at the Grace Museum, in Abilene from area students.
Flach year in March, the most outstanding art pieces are
selected and displayed during the month of March.
Youth Art Month is not only state recognized, but also
nationally recognized. Art not only teaches students the
simple textures and techniques of art, but also helps in giv-
ing them self confidence and a better understanding of
their world.
The display will be up the entire month of March. The
public is encouraged to come and see the different pieces
that are on display. To have a student's art put on display
to the public is a good confidence booster.
Some of the different techniques that can be seen are
pencil, sketch boards, acrylic paint.

assist law enforcement officials and build a stronger part-
nership in the fight against crime, Sheriff David Warren
today announced that Nolan County Citizens are being invit-
ed to become Associate Members of the Sheriffs' Association
of Texas.
Membership invitations will go out in the mail over the
next several days, and in fact some local citizens may have

legislative support on key criminal justice issues to law
enforcement officers across the state as well as here in Nolan

and awareness programs, promote public safety, fight drug
abuse, provide additional training for sheriffs and their
deputies and provide scholarships for children of law
enforcement officers.

deductible.
"The Associate Membership Drive helps provide the fund-
ing which is vital to our mission of making our communities
safer places to live, work and play," said Sheriff Warren.
The Associate Membership Program was created to pro-
vide citizens with an opportunity to lend their support to
more effective law enforcement and to better help local
Sheriffs protect the lives and property of citizens.
"During these economic times, the need for building
stronger public-private law enforcement partnerships con-
tinues to escalate, and programs such as this continue to
grow in importance," said Sheriff Warren. "1 encourage
every citizen receiving a membership appeal to consider
joining forces with us by becoming an Associate Member. It
is a valuable investment in our future."
