commonly used, and It comes In sev-
eral kinds of natural wood, perfectly
smooth on the face of the*strips and
tongued and grooved on ends and sides
so that they can be both end and side
matched. The widths are from it*
Inch face upward. Little work Is need-
ed after it is laid, as most of (he Joint*
will be perfect and at the most only a
little rubbing with sandpaper Is needed
before the finish Is applied. The three-

to handle and can be laid by out: who

Maple Is best for doors which come
to heavy wear, being tough amt show-

the strips may be stained wi(b walnut
stain, which comes ready for use, or
strips of natural wood may be used,
cherry or beech being especially band-
some. White and red oak, either plain
or quarter sawed, are useful for par-
lors or room:; where only ordinary wear
comes on the wood. Birch, beech, wal-
nut, cherry, even mahogany, curly
birch, blnlsiyc and curly maple, red-
wood and sycamore are to be bud.
Borders worked in various colored
woods can be purchased If desired, but
usually the bolder Is made while lay-
ing the floor,.alternating dark and light
strips to suit the fancy. In fastening
the veneer (lie mills are put obliquely
through the tongue of each strip, which

ones that cannot be fastened other-
wise. The first cut shows how the
floor is laid, (he center being filled In

For a border for a maple floor, three
strips of the natural color, then two
