The "ruralea” or police got busy
and the culprit was arrested. This
was on Saturday. Mr. Stewart was
Informed that he would appear In
police court the following Monday.
Mr. Stewart explained that he had no
desire to spend two more day's sn
Juare* to testify against a pickpocket,
especially as all hi* money had been
taken. But the police told him that
they wanted him to stay over and ak-d'
sured (him, so great was their desire
to entertain the Santa Fean, that th*y
would provide comfortable quarters at
the jail for him if he made any at-
tempt to leave Juarez. Mr. Stewart
finally fixed it up, through a brother
Elk, to get away until Monday. While
cropsing the bridge back to El Paso,
however, the custom officials, perhaps*
ae a Joke, held Mr. Stewart up and
re-assured themselves that he had
nothing dutiable on Ms person.
Me.. Stewart got back to El Paso
and soon was on his way tp Santa Fe.
And did he return to Juarez? Ah.
nevermore!

Santa, Fe, N. M.„ Nov. 24.—^Thomas
Stewart, supervisor of the Pecos for-
est, is back from El Paso and Jua-
rez, and he had delightful experiences
in the Pass City and thrilling ones in
the stronghold of the former revolu-
tionists.
While In El Paso Mr. Stewart at-
tended the meeting of the forest su-
pervisors and then, for a little diver-
sion, he crossed the ,Rio Grande and
visited Juarez which he found much
damaged by the recent war. Politics
were brewing, however, and Mr- Stew-
art went to a political meeting after
purchasing a brand new leather wal-
let In which to put about 8*0 In green-
backs. Juarez merchants have some
fine leather wallets and the American
tourist always purchases such an ar-
ticle there, as they arc attractive and
cheap.
This wallet, however, proved dear
to Mr. Stewart, for during tbe politi-
cal meeting someone picked the wal-
let out of his hip pocket where he had
placed It temporarily.
Mr. Stewart felt tho absence of It
and laid his powerful hands on the
man he thought had removed It. This
