Alternative to
Hysterectomy
Tomorrow s health care for many
women is here today' In the past,
one of the principal surgeries for
women with excessive bleeding or
other gynecological problems has
been a hysterectomy This procedure
generally requires a four- to five day
hospital stay and a six-week
recovery period before returning to
work and other normal activities A
new alternative has been approved
this year by the American College ol
Obstetricians and Gynecologists
This new technique is called "En-
dometrial Ablation," and it involves a
simple day surgical procedure that
takes thirty to forty-five minutes
There is no incision and no pelvic or
gans are removed Basically, the
lining of the uterus is removed by
first distending the uterus with a clear
liquid. The fiber-optic scope is
passed through the cervix and a
small roller bar, held in the view of
the scope, removes the lining of the
uterus via electrical current When
the endometrium (lining) is removed,
the symptoms are relieved, and the
menstrual flow is stopped or greatly
reduced Studies have shown that
PMS symptoms may improve after
this procedure.
Patients generally go home the
same day and return to work in two
or three days. Endometrial Ablation
is also less expensive than the costs
associated with a hysterectomy.
This procedure is intended only
for women who have completed
child-bearing, since it is likely that the
end result will be permanent steriliza-
tion.
For more information about this
new procedure, call your physician or
contact Keith Reisler, M.U., Board-
Certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist.

PLACE 3
W.I.S.D. SCHOOL BOARD
During the past 16 months, I have demonstrat-
fisea 1 responsibility and worked to improve
communications -- Not only did I oppose a tax
increase for the 1990-1991 school year, I
offered an option where teachers received the
same salary increase, insurance premiums paid
by the District were increased, and prioritiz-
ed capital equipment was included - all with
NO tax increase!
I’d like your vote to be a continued part of
the quality improvement process.
