Carol Willig Crowned
Homecoming Queen
At half-time ceremonies last
Friday night, Miss Carol Willig
was crowned 1963-64 Homecom-
ing Queen by Mr. M. F. Kruse,
West High School Superintend-
ent. Jim Jaska, Student Council
president, escorted Miss Willig.
Other nominees were Kathy
Rejeek, escorted by Larry Blas-
clike, Pat Chudcj, escorted by
George Smajstrla, and Lou Con-
ner, escorted by Gary Johnson.
Other members of the court
were Miss Barbara Jaska and
Lawson Howard, representing
the ex-students of 1963, and
Mrs. Peggy Scheler Lednicky
and her 'husband, Edwin Led-
nicky, representing last year’s
homecoming queen.
The graduating classes of 1943
and 1953 held their reunions at
the game Friday night also. The
1943 graduates met in the
clothing laboratory and the
class of 1953 met in the living
room of the homemaking de-
partment.
Classes of 1903, 1913, 1923,
1933, and 1963 were also hon-
ored with an open house In the
foods laboratory after the game.
A dance sponsored by the
Student Council was held in the
West High School gymnasium
after the game.

Cub Meeting
West Kiwanis Cub Pack No. 39
held its regular monthly Pack
meeting Monday evening at the
Elementary School Cafetorium.
Mrs. J. J. Spiars was welcomed
as a new Den Mother of Den No.
1.
New Cub Scouts inducted into
the ranks of Bobcat were Mike
Carter; Larry Cope and Robert
Spiars. Larry Payne was wel-
comed as a new member.
Games arranged by Mrs. C.
W. Cernosek were played, re-
freshments of punch and cook-
ies were served. The opening
and closing ceremony was con-
ducted by Mrs. Frank Kellner’s
Den No. 2.

SIXTH GRADE
BAND NEWS
The sixth grade band is prac-
ticing on some new numbers.
They played solos Thursday and
Friday. Friday the seventh
grade band from St. Mary's
■were guests and played for
them. Wednesday the Band
members did work on notes and
had to name them.
One more new member has:
been named to the band. He |
plays drums.

ess to her bridge club Wednes-
day. Mrs. Chas. Smajstrla was

The Penelope FHA Chapter

ton on Saturday, Nov. 2. Brenda

Guest speakers for the eve-
ning were beauticians, Mr. and
Mrs. Raymond Schultz of Hub-
bard. Very helpful hints on
grooming were presented. A
demonstration was also given.

Friendship Club
Mrs. Elmer Cox entertained'
the Friendship Club at her
home with a Halloween Party,
Tuesday, October 29. Each of
the members came dressed in
the traditional costumes for the
oc. asion.
Those present were: Grade
Busby, Virgie Clements. Jewell
Potcet, Lena Hill, Jessie Mae
Odle, Lois Johnson, Julia Mor-
gan, Vivian Puckett, Ollie Hall,
Lizzie Allen and Nina McMahan.
Julia Murgan won the door
prize.
A buffet supper was served
consisting of fried chicken, meat
loaf, baked potatoes, baked
beans, congealed salad, pickles,
hot rolls with butter, cake, iced
tea, coffee and cold drinks. The
next meeting will be in the
home of Lena Hill in November.

Troop Meets
Troop St. Margaret Mary held
their meeting at the home of
Altia Kopecky on Wednesday,
October 23.
The troop made Halloween
bags for their craft work. For
their honor work the life of St.
Margaret Mary was discussed.

in St. Mary’s Catholic Church
of the Assumption in Waco, Rev.
Leonard Leddy officiated.
Couple’s parents are Mr. and
Mrs. Otis J. Ceska of Waco and
Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Brem of Rt.
2, West.
The bride chose a gown of
white chantilly lace and tulle.
It had a scalloped scooped neck-
line, long tapered sleeves and
fitted lace bodice. The bouffant
tulle skirt held appliques of
chantilly lace scattered over the
floor-length skirt. A pearl crown
held her illusion veil and she
carried a bouquet of white car-
nations and white orchid atop
a white prayer book, gift of the
bridegroom.
Bride’s attendants were Mrs.
Marvin Brem of West, bride-
groom’s sister-in-law; Miss Ber-
nice Mach of Temple, bride’s
cousin; Miss Edith Svrcek of
West, Miss Georgia Kozlovsky of
McGregor, and Wacoans Miss
Jeanette Bounds, Miss Hattie
Matus and Miss Mary Sue
Moore.
Their attire included identical
street length dresses of blue or-
ganza over taffeta with scooped
hecklines and bouffant skirts.
The matron of honor’s dress was
of the same design but a lighter
blue. The headpieces matched
their dresses and they carried
white carnation bouquets.
Bridegroom’s brother, Marvin
Brem of West, was best man.
Groomsmen were Eugene Schil-
ler of Temple, Ollie and Herbert
Brem of West, bridegroom's
brothers, Donald Schroeder of
West, Jerry Hawkins of Temple
and Dennis Macha of West.
Witnesses were Edward Brem
of Waco, bridegroom's brother,
and Victor Poshobradsky of
Ennis, bride’s uncle. Altar boys
were Freddie Brem of West,
bridegroom’s cousin, and Larry
Schroeder of West. Johnny
Gaidusek and Ray Moore of Wa-
co were ushers.
A reception held in the parish
hall immediately after the cere-
mony had as house party mem-
bers Mrs. Garland Dulock, Mrs.
Eugene Sebik. and Miss Jerry
Aim Urban of Dallas. Parents of
the bride and bridegroom were
hosts at a dinner and dance
held in Linden Hall at Elm Mott.
Mrs. Brem graduated from
University High School and
Four-C Business College. In high
school she was in National Hon-
or Society, Student Council, Fu-
ture Teachers of America and
received the American Legion
Citizenship Award.
Mr. Brem graduated from
West High School and attended
Baylor University. In high
school he was in Future Farm-
ers of America, Letterman’s
Club, and participated in base-
ball. football and track.
The bride is employtd as a
secretary by Texas Education
Agency, Vocational Rehabilita-
tion Division. Tlie bridegroom
works for Imperial Woodworks
Inc. After a short wedding trip
the couple will live in Waco.

guests.

Mrs. McMordie served pump-
kin chiffon pie and coffee. The

C.D.A. TROOP HOLDS
MEETING WEDNESDAY
CDA Troop St. Cecilia held its
first meeting of the year on
Wednesday, Oct. 23. The election
of officers was held. The troop
made tile braclets and saw films
from Six Flags Over Texas.
All members and councelors
were present. They are Joyce
Laubert, Peggy Kapavik, Kathy
Dovers, Monica Soukup, Annette
Kutscherousky, Fran Hannas,
Dianalynn Kopecky, Mary Mil-
ler, Susan Carter, Cindy Neme-
cek, Debbie Habrel, Miss Tracy
Dvoracek and Miss Mary Dvora-
cek.
Susan Carter was hostess. She
served cookies and soda pop.

Wed In Tours
Miss Linda Joyce Mynar be-
came the bride of Ronald C. Mc-
Williams in St. Martin’s Cath-
olic Church of Tours Saturday
noon. Rev. Ed Geiser performed
the ceremony.
The couple’s parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Felix V. Mynar of Tours
and Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Mc-
Williams of 213 Birch St. in
Lacy-Lakeview were hosts for a
reception in St. Martin’s Hall
after the ceremony. A supper
was served at 4 p.m. and a dance
followed.
The bride wore a floor-length
peau de soie dress. A soft cum-
merbund accented a bodice with
scoop neckline enhanced with a
pearl and sequin reembroidered
appliqued floral motif. Front
panel of the skirt repeated the
design and a peau de soie rose
with lilies of the valley held her
shoulder-length veil. She carried
a cascade of carnations and or-
chids.
Mrs. Arnold Gerik Jr. was her
sister’s matron of honor. Three
of the bride’s cousins, Misses
Helen Barton, Martha Hutyra
and Debbie Uptmor were brides-
maids. They wore street length
dresses of Azalea pink nylon
over satin, matching hats and
with short veils and they car-
ried colonial bouquets of pink
chrysanthemums.
Arnold Gerik Jr. was best man.
Barry McWilliams, brother of
the bridegroom, Andy Behring-
er and Felix Mynar Jr., brother
of the bride were groomsmen.
Ushers were the bride’s uncle,
Frankie Lee Uptmore and Ross
Thornton a n cl candlelighters
were Ernest Uptmore Jr., cousin
of the bride, and Edward
Chudej.
The bride graduated from
West High School and is em-
ployed in Waco. The bridegroom
graduated form Connally High
School and is employed with
Mosley Machine Company.
Mr. and Mrs. McWilliams are
on a short wedding trip and
upon their return they will
make their home in Tours.

covered with white tulle of satin.

mother of the bride-elect, and

mother of the prospective bride-

The young couple will be mar-
ried Nov. 9 in Immaculate Heart
of Mary Church in Abbott.

Elects Officers
The Abbott Junior 4-H Club
elected Belinda Long to serve
as their President. They met for
the first time on October 22 at
2:30 p.m. at-the Abbott School
Lunchroom.

WSCS Meeting
Held Monday
The WSCS met in the chapel
of the Methodist Church Mon-
day, for a program meeting
entitled "A Call to Prayer and
Self-Denial.”
The meeting was opened with
a prayer and scripture reading
by Mrs. Denton, followed by
meditation and prayer by Mrs.
Alice Allison.
Mines. Denton, Moon, Martin,
Harris, Wendorf, Seat, Lunday
and Arthur gave talks on mis-
sionary work in America and
foreign countries.
Hykels Celebrate
Golden Wedding
Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Hykel were
honored by their children on
their Golden Wedding Anni-
versary on Saturday, October 26,
1963.
Thanksgiving Mass was cele-
brated at Immaculate Heart of
Mary Catholic Church in Ab-
bott. Rev. W. Pechal officiated
at the Mass.
Mrs. Albina Walla, Mrs. Mary
Kessler, Mr. and Mrs. John Mac-
hovsky, and Mr. Alois Hykel who
were attendants at their wed-
ding 50 years ago were present
for the occasion.
Two of their grandsons, Joe
and Richard Schroeder, were
altar boys.
Dinner was held at the SPJST
Hall in West followed by a
dance.
All of their children were
present. They are: Jimmy Hykel
of Abbott; Cyrill Hykel of Elm
Mott; Lillie Schroeder of Tours;
Magdalene Gajdica of Dallas;
John Hykel of Everett, Wash.,
Willie Hykel of Dallas; Mary
Lou Clawson of Everett, Wash.;
and Tony Hykel of Dallas.
The children of the late Mar-
garet Hykel Masonhall of
Okeene, Okla., were present. Mr.
and Mrs. Hykel have two great-
grandchildren, Mark and Ann-
Margaret Helona, children of
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Helona
of Waco.
They have 32 grandchildren
and four step-grandchildren.
Mr. Hykel is a retired farmer.
Mrs. Hykel is the former Anns-
tacia Ondracek of Penelope.

attended the three-day eonven-
tion of tlie Texas Fraternal
Congress held October 24-26 in
Dallas. Attending with her were
Mrs. Bonita Pavlu, KJZT Su-
preme President: Miss Gertrude
Bohac. Financial Secretary; and
Mrs. Tim Maresh, KJZT Coun-
selor.
Mrs. Pavlu was elected Vice-
President of the "Publicity Sec-
tion” of TFC and Mrs. Estelle
Smith of Dallas, Youth Director
for KJZT, was elected secre-
tary of the “Youth Counselors’
Section.”
KJZT was awarded $10 from
the TFC for the best poster:
“Display on Youth Activities
for 1963.”

You-Con Count on Hen
The date for the Girl Scouts
to attend a Baylor football
game at Baylor stadium in Wa-
co, has been changed to Nov.
16 when Baylor will play Ken-
tucky. Reason: the TCU-Baylor
game of Nov. 2nd. previously an-
nounced is a sell-out and Bay-
lor cannot extend us the cour-
tisies they can on Nov. 16.
Tickets will be sold to Girl
Scouts and their leaders at the
window on the east side of the
stadium, beginning at 12:00
noon. A reservation will be made
for seating the Scouts in the
east section of the stadium.

RETURNS FROM
HAWAIIAN TRIP
Mrs. Pauline Binder recently
returned from the Hawaiian Is-
lands where she visited with her
son, Robert Binder and family,
who live in Waialua Oahu, Ha-
waii.
During her stay, Mrs. Binner
visited many points of interest.
She remained in Hawaii for four
and one-half months.
She returned to West Thurs-
day, October 24.

teacher, and her journalism
class, toured The West News of-
fice and plant Wednesday, Oc-
tober 16.
Nick Morris, editor of the
Vestnik, spoke to the class be-
fore giving them the tour, stres-
sing the importance of English
fundamentals. Mr. Jerome Ko-
pecky and John Ripley, linotype
operators, paused in their work
to show the students how mol-
ten metal is formed into letters
to set up lines of type. The
operator of the machine works
at a keyboard similar to that of
a typewriter. Lines of type are
combined to form newspaper
columns.
Mr. Ernest Tobola described
the operation of the printing
press.
We are happy to have had
these students visit us and will
be happy for them to visit us
at any time.
School To Dismiss
Early Today
School will be dismissed at
3:15 today in order to give buses
time to make the football trip to
Teague tonight.
Early bus students are to be
dismissed at 2:45 p.m. and West
Elementary will release pupils
at 3:05 p.m.

GLATTERS RETURN
FROM COLORADO TRIP
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Glatter
and daughter, Debbie, of West,
accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Gene
Glatter from Dayton, Texas, on
a trip to Denver, Colorado, to
visit their brother, Max Glatter.
Enroute home they toured West
Texas and in Slayton they
visited relatives.
