Spotlight on issue brings sudden activity
The power of the press can push people into action
and even put fear into them. This seems to be the case
concerning the issue of the lack of activities on
campus.
Because the word got out that The Pony Express was
doing a survey and story to express students' opinions
on campus activities, the issue has suddenly become a
top priority with persons in charge of student
activities.
Now what I want to know is if we had not decided
to put the spotlight on the issue would it have come
up at all?
This subject is not at all new. Students, especially
dorm residents, have always complained of the fact
that there is nothing to do on campus once classes are
over. I do not live on campus, but I do know people
who do, and this is a common complaint.
I also wonder if these sudden activities (buffets,
movies, etc.) are just an effort to stop any bad press or
remove any heat from administrators. I hope it is not.
If it is a stopgap attempt, The Pony Express staff will
be here to address the issue again.
From the information I have, the same activities
that students would like to have, such as movies,
games and an active intramurals program, were
offered a couple of years ago. Now here we are a
couple of years later and it is an issue again.
There is no point in doing something one year and
not carrying through with it. I think starting
something and not following through only halts
progress.
The possibilities of the different activities that could
have been tried and added within the past few years
is endless. Ideas from other college campuses could be
tried. Just because we are a community college does
not mean we should be limited in providing students
with the full experience of college life.

More extracurricular activities needed
Time and time again Panola students have
complained that there is nothing to do on week
nights.
This is an area where the college needs to step in
and offer students activities for nights when there is
nothing to do.
Students are already charged for student activities
according to the Panola College catalog. So why aren't
these activities provided? Where is this going?
Everything is already here. It is just a matter of
making it available to the students at later hours.
For example, the Student Center could be opened at
night. Students could look forward to a movie night
once a week, or even a miniature dance around the
jukebox once in awhile.
Many students also play pool and would enjoy
having the pool room opened a couple of hours at
night.

We are not saying that these activities should out-
weigh studying. That is quite the opposite. If students
can get their work done then they should have some
kind of accessible recreation.
Some people might say that there are plenty of
activities around Carthage for students. But, ask
yourself how many of the students who reside in the
dorms drive cars?
The college should offer activities for dorm
residents as well as other students who would enjoy
various nightly activities.
We are paying our money for this and should be
offered more forms of entertainment.

Student response requested
on student activities issue
College life should be a time of learning but let's not
forget the parties, dances, homecoming, games and
other student activities that most college campuses
offer their students.
But at Panola, there are not many activities that
students can take part in. I can think of a few dances
in three semesters that I have attended but that's all.
As a student, I think a better job can be done in
providing more student activities. I do not think I am
alone in what I feel. But in order to know how
students feel and what they want, the administration
has to be told.
I am encouraging students to write to The Pony
Express and have their opinions heard. If we want
change, we have to initialize the process ourselves.
Talking with other students, I know that there is a
lot that needs to be addressed. Our staff tries its best
to publish articles on subjects you, the students, want
to know about. However, we may not cover
everything so we need your help. So far we have
addressed several issues including the lack of pay
phones and gotten a positive response.
I think we should take advantage of our ad-
ministration's responsiveness and effectiveness and
use it to our advantage.
Students are the most important part of any college
or university campus and their needs should be a
priority.
