*^/as the night before Christmas in our barracks caller5 home,
A Soldier sat griping-^an; he wasn11 alone—
As he thought of the Army an; the things one must ;o
Erom morning *til night before one is through*
He thought of the bugler who wakes him at six,
An; the calls*1 Out si; e, police up those butts an; match sticks!1*
Of time,-age-long, he has spent in rain, snow an* sunshine,
Those endlessly long minutes just waiting in line.
If he sought for relief in after his chow
10?was: **Get~in line, Soldier, they*recall occupies now!**
To this standing in line routine he ha; to consent,
It was constantly with him, wherever he went.
He recalled the morn, on that past month* s last ;ay,
When the Sarge ha; bellowe;: **Eall out, but fast, collect some pay!11
Tikeii his name was caller he fell gladly into line,
Eor that pay to him meant a bit of a gol; mine,
But, after waiting an hour", alas an; alack!
Sarge sai;:»fjot yet, Soldier; you* 11 have to come back!**
11 Some business,** he mutt ere;, an; to himself thought
Of the nights spent alone when one really ha; ought
To be out on a pass an; ;oing the town
Tfith a gal on his arm" to oe showing aroun;.
And, as his thoughts dwelt on these an; many more gripes,
There arose a shrill whistle from the mighty man*s pipes.
Out leape; the Sol;ier, he jumps; up with a lick,
**Aha,** he muse;, **Comes now ol; jolly Saint pick!**
Then ;own through the chimney came goo; ol; Top Sarge,
In his han;s were some papers, that looke; like a discharge*
But he rea; from those papers, with a grin fille; with high glees
"MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL—YOU* RE ALL OF 1C.?.!**
