SOUTH JETTY
PAGE 3
My Monday started on a down
beat.
Browsing through the sports
pages I learned that Tracy Austin,
a 17-year old high school senior,
has now climbed past the
$1,000,000 mark in “earnings” as
a tennis pro. Think about it.
It didn’t get any better. While
shaving, I was caught in mid-
stroke by a radio announcement.
Seems ol’ chuckles, the Ayatollah
Khomeini, is furious and threat-
ening reprisals because 200 riot-
ing Iranians were arrested and
jailed in this country.
If you think that’s ridiculous!
Two of the rioting Iranians who
somehow managed to escape are
now suing the government, Wash-
ington police and maybe God
Himself for b.25 million dollars
because they were “brutally’’
handled during the riot. Sheesh!
Then it really got worse. There
was an astounding newspaper
story about people who are
dumping deadly toxic waste along
country roads, leaving it untended
in rented warehouses, and aban-
doning large quantities in busy
supermarket parking lots. Enemy
agents? Saboteurs? Not on your
bippy! Just plain ol’ ordinary
free-enterprise American business
men out to make a buck!
Heading for the post office and
the mail I was convinced things
would get better.
Who was I trying to kid?
The first letter I opened was
from some outfit called MOBILI-
ZATION FOR SURVIVAL. I won’t
go into the gruesome details but
they cited and documented the
hazards of nuclear proliferation in
the world. And there are quite a
few. Just wish those groups didn't
always want money. Wonder if
Tracy Austin would be willing to
help a little?
Then came a note from The
Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists
offering me an annual subscrip-
tion at a 50% discount. Might
have accepted except I would
have had to take a copy of
Einstein and Peace as my reward.
I don’t have that much time left.
Having been reduced to state of
numbness by the adversities
looming in my future, I was
suddenly shocked back to real life.
Our telephone bill did the trick.
Remember those two or three
nice young men we housed for a
week or so because they were out
of funds and looking for work?
Sure you do. One of'em hailed
from the state of Washington,
another from Missouri and the
third from Massachusetts.
Are you starting to get the
picture? That’s right. More than
$250 in long distance calls appear
on our bill. All of them to
Washington, Missouri and Massa-
chusetts.
Wonder if Tracy Austin would
be interested in extending me a
low-interest, long-term loan?
