Ascension Catholic Church's Festival draws 'at least' 3,000
The Cotton candy at the Spring Festival was as sticky and as popular as ever with the
youngsters.

Barbecue, bingo, balloons
and cotton candy plus a
beautiful spring day were
the hi^hli^hts of the 14th
Festival put on by parish
oners of Bastrop's Ascension
Catholic Church Sunday.
This year's spring event
was "bigger than before,"
drawing an estimated "mini
muni of 3.000" people, said
Fr. Edward J. Kokupil.
pastor. "There was a
constant flow of people from
11 a.m. on," he said, and
about 1,350 of them munched
down on the steaming plates
of barbecue and "trim
mings."
Also on hand was a
television crew filming a
documentary for Austin
Community Television which
broadcasts on the cable
channel 10. The group was
initially interested in barbe^
cue as a subject, said Fr.
Docupil, but the colorful
occasion led them to focus
more attention on the
festival itself. Part of the
crew returned Tuesday to
film follow up interviews, he
added.
Fr. Docupil declined to say
how much money the event
raised, but in the past it has
collected up to $8,000. The
take this year may have
been closer to $10,000,
according to some estimates.
Parents like Donald and Kathy Gregory lound the balloons at least as much fun as the
children did Sunday at the Spring Festival held by Ascension Catholic Church.

Laurel Thomas wins
national scholarship
Laurel Ann Thomas, 17-
year-old senior at Bastrop
High School, is the recipient
of the Gertrude Botts
Saucier Scholarship offered
by the United Daughters of
the Confederacy.
Laurel was selected for
this four year scholarship
from candidates from all
over the United States. She
was judged on the basis of
high school grades, teacher
recommendations, SAT
scores and her extra-curricu
lar activities.
Laurel has also been
named first runner up in a
scholarship competition
sponsored by the National
Society of Professional En
gineers.
She has been offered
academic scholarship to the
University of Texas and
Texas A&M, but has decided
to enter Rice University this
fall as a Pre-Med/Psychol-
ogy major.
I^aurel is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Kendall S.
Thomas, Sr. of Pope Bend
Road.
"Of course that isn't all
profit and our expenses are
higher with the higher cost
of meat" for the barbecue,
said one of the festival
workers.
The water ducking stand,
which had not been used for
several years, was a "big hit
this year," said Fr. DocupiL
"We need a bigger tank
though," he added.
Traditionally the church's
Fall Festival is the bigger of
the two events the church
puts on, he said, but in the
beautiful weather "everyone
seemed to be having a good
time."
Money raised by the
festivals goes into a building
fund for the construction of a
new church, said Fr.
Docupil. The building pre
sently being used for
services and other parish
functions is not meant for a
permanent church, he said.
A drawing for a hand
made quilt was won by Doris
Ingram of Bastrop and a
hand crafted picture was
won by L.B. Kasberg of
Bastrop.
"We appreciate the sup
port of all who shared the
day with us and made it the
success it was," said Fr.
Docupil.
