most bizarre twist to the
story of the recovered
stolen guns from Ken and
Peggy Perkins' River
Country Sports has to do
with haircuts. It seems that
the winners of pool game at
one local bistro have been
allowed to shave off the
hair of the losers and there
have been more baldies
running around Bastrop
than usual. The hairless
nature of one of the suspec-
ts in the stolen gun case
helped gun store owners,
friends and law men catch
the suspect....Those signs
inviting everyone to an Old

intrigued Ron Stubblefield
and others. Turns out it's a
forum for the three unop-
posed candidates for the
Bastrop Independent
School District Board at 7
p.m., staged by the PTA as
part of the organization's
annual meeting. Hot dogs
and apple pie will be served
at S3 for adults and SI.50
for children and you'll
have a chance to get into
detail about what the
school system is doing by
questioning Verlin
Callahan, Hubert Linen-
berger and Bobby Jenkins...
By the time the forum is
held, BISD will probably
have a new athletic director.
Current AD Dennis Gorka
has a new position at
another district, friends
told The Advertiser Fri-
day If you think circuses
are relics of the past, ask
Bill Davison. He said Sat-
urday over 675 advance
tickets were sold last week
for the Roller Circus
coming to Smithville April
8 for a performance spon-
sored by Smithville Lions
Club.

said that he had suspects al-
ready in mind when he dis-
covered the break-in, since
the two young males had
entered the store several
times and asked about the
pistols. The pistols that
Holmes had been most in-
terested in were among the
ones stolen and that the
stolen ammunition could
be used in, Perkins said.
According to Dungan,
entrance was made into the
building from the rear
window. Perkins said that
his alarm system malfunc-
tioned', and that he was
surprised that a burglar
would attempt to break-in
after he had been in and
seen the system in
operation.
Soon after the burglary
was discovered in the mor-
ning, police were called te
the scene. Perkins said that"
he also called Judy Edwar-
ds at the District Attorney's
office and they quickly
spread the word through
local bars and businesses
that the pistols had been
stolen. He explained that
stolen guns often exchange
hands from contacts made
in bars.
Several citizens had their
eye out for possible sale of
the guns and when one of
the youngsters reportedly
bragged about taking stuff
from the River Country
Sporting Goods at a drink-
ing establishment, police
were notified and the
arrests were made quickly.
After the arrests, the
youngest of the suspects
showed lawmen and
Perkins where the guns
were hidden near the low-
water crossings leading in-
to Riverwood Acres.
Perkins said that most;of
the pistols stolen were lar^e
caliber or were semi-
automatic weapons.
Holmes remained jailed
on $7,000 bond Friday.
