"My husband" she said coldly "objects

for a abort walk."
And ahe told herself the while she flung
on her golf cape and crushed a little

was the only time shs would speak with

"It's all very harmonious" said Roy

An Open Letter to the Governor
Anent Recent Inspection.
The following cammunlcatlon has bean
sent The Post for publication:
Hon. B. W. T. Lanham Austin Texae.
Smlthvllle Texaa June . Dear Sir:-
We are in receipt of your letter with In-
cloaurea fiom General Hulen bearing even
date of June IT. General Hulen expresses
himself ss much surprised at our action
In this matter and claims to have acted
largely under advice snd suggestions ot
our committee. He (General Hulen) can
not and will not claim that the Idea and
Intention of a re-opened band contest dfd
not orlglnsts with him prior to this meet-
ing. Both bands and eltlsens knew It to
be hla Intention snd w are proud of ths
spirit that prompted a challenge to his
.unwarranted ultimatum. This done our
recent record should hays secured for
OS st least thoughtful consideration In
all ths details of a re-opened contest
On the other hand what Is ths matter
with our band? They make no claim as
professionals but they have fully estab-
lished themselves ss up to date amateurs
making a splendid record during the past
three years and dividing honors with ths
best bands la th Stat.
What manner of band would" General
Hulen have for the Texas National
Guard? T o our way of thinking his let-
ter Is a tedious mockery totally lacking
In all the sense of right and justice. Is
the history ot our encampments so filled
with such esDorblng chapters of valorous
deads and daring bravery that the bands
an otherwlseieemlnci tarjmrtant factor:
are entirely Ignored sMJsittottenl Would
General Hulen clasa sav bands- art ionde-
acrlpt nonentities rcsgklr defined i
cross between the braf
fcy- as a
IsclancT the
roar of s blunderbuss a noisy ll harm-
lea plaything foi hla amusement at en
campments? Does he class th band as
a oompany of lowly artisans without
Srtde patrlotlam aspiration or even the'
ope of recognition or equality with Its
comrades in service? Is the band like
unto the tall of a dog that wags at the
allghteat recognition of Ita master obe-
dient to hla berk and call; fondled or
kicked but always submissive to the tem-
per of a tyrant master? Doea Texaa
want bands like this?. Do you want sucn
bands? We think not.. Then raise the
standard and give them -their rights. Re-
cognise the band as a company; the mu-
sician aa a compatriot a man among
men. Let no high official tamper with
their rlgta and barter honors fairly won
In valorous contest. When this Is dons
the spirit of rtvslry will be a wholesome
Incentive In honorable contests of sll com-
panies bsnds Included. Let the Texas
National Guard be tree from sll appear-
ance of favoritism.
In conclusion we will ssy that If our
band la objectionable and not wanted
by officers In charge of thla provisional
regiment our band and eltlsens will make
no further contention for what we bellev
to b our rights. Very respectfully.
