American markeU war not incline to
continue the strength jnnibttcd at the
close of thi day previous and though the
opening was a" shade better there was
presently an asms; off.
The staple found very few friends
among the scalping element which as a
matter of fact about eomprlsaa tM sa-
tire trading at present. The rang ot
values was narrow j the high and low
points for the entire day showing a dl-.
ferenoe of only W to It points. The dose
was at practically ths low leva! for the
day. but even then the loss was little
more than nominal amounting to 1 to
t points at New Tork and f to 11 points
'at Nsw Orleans.'
One steadying feature of ths day was
ths estimate of the crop condition by the
Journal of Commerce which placed ths
average at 33.3. This inasmuch as it Is
only 1.4 points better than the condition
of a month ago was considered rather
bulks by some and therefore for a brief
period there was a slight upward ten-
dency. Later tha effect appeared to wear
off and the course was downward. It is
probable that traders began to consider
that while the' average Is only a little
above that of a month ago. It Is LI points
better than It was a year age when it
was 74.1 Therefore even If it should de-
velop that the figures agree with those
of the government statistician It is diffi-
cult to see how a bullish construction
could be admitted.
In this connection a prominent New
Orleans firm estimates that a condition
of less than M will mean an advance
while 97 or better would moat likely bring
on a decline.
A prominent New Tork commission
house wired during the Jay that they
made the average (ft but of course this
is only the opinion of one firm and la to
be uken merely tor what It Is worth.
There Is no telling what the government
will make the average and operators are
doing a world of speculating In this par-
ticular .
The demand for spot cotton was fair
and prices In America were unchanged.
Sales at -New Orleans snd New York
were fairly good -. .

COTTON COMMENT.
Hayward Vick ft Co. ot New Orleans.
People nowadays are not -quite so easy
and take good care that they have not
to pay for a good thlno-when Invited as
guests. A condition even sa low as 83
would be against preeent new crop prices
as 83 would be 6 points better than laat
year s figures and a 6-polnt better June
f "S?iii?n. wth .better rooted plant and
8.UOO.0OO Increase In acreage are enough
guarantee for a larger yield than thla
season s which is now selling at 104 and
Is not even consumed at that low price.
If July la only worth 10)4. the new crop
on the present outlook appears unduly
well paid for with 94. Trading in winter
months settled around 9.36 very little
doing. Every time prices recede little
there Is some buying; not for conviction
but simply because one buyer counts on
others getting struck with ths same idee
when the first resells to a late comer
with a fe points profit. There Is no
room for the public in this narrow game
but a change Is not far off. Tomorrow Is
the laat bualnees day before bureau day
and some selling Is likely.
H. 4k B. Beer of New Orleens.-Rumor

amount of cotton would be shipped to
New Orleane this month presumably for
July delivery but all efforti to aoqulre.
some knowledge ss to whether ths report
was true failed railroad officials claim-
ing to know nothing of It
Liverpool advices continue bullish ten-
ders to extent of 46000 balea having been
received by two speculators In the Eng-
llah market during the past two days.
Sentiment In the Btatee however is
rather bearish and as noon weather
today promised a more favorable weather
map in the morning condition! being gen-
erally clear and warm In all sections of
the belt the market cloaed at the lowest
of the uay October 9.39 July jlj9.
Boedeker Burwell 4k Cherry-5ur New
Tork correspondents wired: We do not
look for material change either way for
the balance Of the week snd regard tha
speculative Interest in the market as
largely reduced. The Journal of Com-
merce Issues a crop report for ths month
of June and makes condition about 9M
points better. It Is generally expected
that the average condition to be given
by the agricultural department next week
will be upward of 36. We think a con-
dition of 86 Is practically discounted ss
few think it could be less than that. The
course of prices will be entirely governed
by tne dully weather and crop news but
If there are no unfavorable developments
during the holidays. Inasmuch as we
think a large part ot the short Interest
has been covered up during the week
lower prices next week are likely to oc-
cur. J. N. Wlaner A Co. There will proba-
bly be considerable liquidation on both
sides preceding the bureau and conse-
quently the various options are likely to
fluctuate materially.
Prices are now down to about the low-
est level that has yet been reached and
should the situation either through un-
favorable conditions or a" disposition on
ths part of spinners to buy more freely
change sentiment we would quickly see
a good upward reeetlon r however en the
other hand with continued favorable crop
prospects snd demand for actual cotton
lukewarm It may be difficult to enhance
values above the preeent level

DEMAND FOR EGGS
CONTINUES GOOD.
Poultry Prices Are Easy Vwt
Car of Bananas Texas Pott-

Ths market was well supplied wtth

Texsa plums were also steady and the
demand very good at 48 cents per crate
and 40 cents per box.
There Is a good demand for eggs. : Re-
ceipts are not as heavy as they have
been and prices accordingly hold up well
the average being from 9 to 10 cents per
dosen. Strictly fresh candled stock sells
as high as 11 snd 13 cents.
Chickens continue rather slow and
some dealers are compelled to ship to
New Orleans and other points in order to
realise anything like reasonable prices.
The stock of chickens from day to day
continues heavy and the receipts for ths
month of June while- they can not be
accurately given have been something
tnormous.
Baldwin A CargUl reoeived A oar of
choice watermelons yesterday which sold
at 31.60 to 31.76 per ftosen.
Texas tomatoes continue la bountiful
supply and the demand la reasonably
good. Prices however are born down
by the heavy receipts.
The C. L. Desel oompany reoeived a eat
of Texas sou toes which met with
good demand at 90 cents psr bushel.
The markat 14 very well supplied with'
Texas onions. The stock Is tlrst-dass

New York. June 30. The cotton market
opened quiet at an advance of 4 to
points on th old crop and of 1 to 3 on
the new crop month In response to
steadier cables than expected and under
covering. Influenced perhaps by ths dis-
appointing showing mads by a private
crop report issued before the opening
which placed the July condition ot th
crop at 83.2 per cent. The weather over
the South being regarded as practically
Ideal there was no attempt at bull spec-
ulation and soon after the opening prices
which at first had shown sotpethlng of
an advancing tendency turned easier and
sold off to a net lots of i to 1 points.
The market ruled quiet and Irregular
between that level and closing prices
ot ths previous day during ths balance
of the session. A leading Wall' street
operator Issued a rather bullish circular
during tha early afternoon -but ther was
considerable selling by brokers supposed
to represent this party. In tha afternoon

by other large room shorts th market

intereets aa a rule seemed confident
-enough of their position to do little or
nothing during the day's session.- wire
houaes with Southern connection were)
