T. H. Ball Thinks Senator Culberson
Can Increase Figures
TO HALF A MILLION DOLLARS
Received a Message that " Bill Had
Passed House Carrying Rpuston
Item for $350000 Moore
Made Remarkable Fight.
At 8:43 o'clock yesterday afternoon -Congressman'Tkomas
H. Ball received a tele-
gram from Congressman John M. Moore an
nouncing the passage ot the house bill ap-
propriating $320000 for the Federal building
in Houston. Yesterday's Post contained a
full account of the committee's report on the
appropriation bill the Houston Item being
the leading one In the schedule.
The telegram was as follows:
"Washington. t. C. June:. t.VJ" p. m.V
Thomas ti. Ball. Houston. Texas. House
bill passed carrying $3iO.eO for Houston
building. John M. Moore.
When seen vesterday In regard to the mat-
tor Miy Hall was Inclined to believe that the
appropriation will be raised hy the senute
when the bill comes before it. "Senator I ul-
herson hus previously passed his bill In the
senate appropriating $roo;iiio." s.tkl Mr. Ball.
"And as the ranking member of the demo-
cratic minority in the s. nate committee on
public buildings and grounds. Senator Cul-
berson wil) make every effort to have the
amount carried by the house bill Increased
to carry the amount named in his bill.
APPROACH OF APJOI-RNMF.XT MAT If-
TERFERh. Tt sua rumored In Washington that the
speaker would not permit the house bill to
pass until assured' that the senate would ac-
cept it as it came from the house. .1 have
no confidence In this rumor and 1 am sure
the senate made no such committal. Tne only
thing that can prevent Senator Culberson
from having the Item increased in the senate
will be the haste made necessary In consid-
ering the bill by the near approach of the
adjournment of congress 'l nere are quite
a number of Texas Items ra me oiu. m'ira
so large as Houston's however and Senator
Culberson may be compelled to accept the
Houston Item "ns It came from the House that
Texas as a whole may fare reasonably well.
He will not do so' however ir persistent ef-
forts in behalf of Houston will avail.
"Representative Moore has put up the best
possible fight and personal Inquiry in Wash-
ington satisfied me that with the limitations
imposed upon the general slxe of the bill.
Which carries a great number of projects
throughout the country that it was wholly
Impracticable to obtain a larger appropria-
tion. "In fact the committee was loath to allow
as much. Representative Moore and Senator
Culberson are working in harmony In the
matter and whatever the outcome our peo-
ple will have had the best results obtainable
by active and intelligent effort. Our mem-
ber . of the house committee from Texas
Representative Sheppard. has had imposed
upon him the duty of looking after all Texas
protects. And the result shows his good-
work for the State. The Houston appropria-
tion was given his active support from the
outset."
CONOR ATTLATES MOORE.
Congressman Moore hns conducted the
campaign for the Houston postofftee appro-
priation very creditably" stated Secretary
George. P. Brown of the Houston Business
league yesterday upon reading the report
in yesterday s Post of the .committee's report
on the appropriation . bill. "No rspublican
could possibly have done any better. Of
course we Housronians believe that Houston
should have half a million dollar building
but we are on the ground and brought. In
cl"se coma-' with the necessity. In Wash-
ington the local influence d-es not obtain. In
fitct. almost every congressman has some-
thing that he 1 pushing. Viewed under
these circumstances-- a - building - ensting-
$.i -.0.000- Is r.rt so bad. It will not be long
until addiM'.ns and extensions are necessary
but we wiil get them when we need them."
