will be a great demand for the grounds.

APPEAL FOR CLEANER CITY j
Board of Healtli Health Officer and Mayor Unite in
Timd7 Address
The following self-explanatory appeal ha been Issued to the dtlsens of
Houston I
To the Clttsens of Houston.
Houston Texas July 1 Ths mayor board of health and health depart-
ment begs for your co-operation In Its sanitary work tor without It Uttl
can be aooornpllshsd. and a very ciU sen owes It to the community In which
he or she resides to do .that which Is for the publlo good. More money ha
bean spent by tbe city hi the last nl nety day In the health and auxiliary de-
partment thaa ever before for thl time of the year and th result have
been moat gratifying; but now wa moat respectfully urge the Individual to
redouble hla efforts with special reference to the mosquito destruction.
And to Sin that end place your premises In a good sanitary condition;
have all weed in your yards gutter and on sidewalks cut and carried
off or burned; see that th gutter a re cleaned and contain no standing
water: have all refuse garbage etc. gathered up and put In a receptacle kept
for the purpcee and plaaad In a convenient place for the garbage cart to
get It and remove It from your premises. Should th garbage or cavnger
man fall to clean up at regular times confer a favor by reporting th neg-
lect to thoee respective department at once that It may be remedied. See
to It that you bar no exposed standing water on your premise. Water
offer aa opportunity for th breeding of mosquitoes and It Is proven be-
yond question that different species of these Insects propagate different dis-
eases so It la vary essential that their breeding places be destroyed.
. If you hav a cistern bare a oov er made for It and keep It covered. If
there Is aa opan pool pa your place t hat has to remain have the surface cov-
ered with film of kerosene oil once and every ten days. If you have to
hav barrel or any other container o f water about your place then have It
either screened with fine wire netting covered with a top or treated with
on. By all mean atop th breodln g of mosquitoes on your place and get
your neighbor to do likewise. By so doing you will not only lessen the sick-
ness In your family but will render t he summer evenings bearable.
Tbe crusade against th Uttl In sects Is being carried on from Main to
Mexico and with gratifying results. Cities that heretofore have been cursed
with swarm of mosquitoes every su mmer which made life miserable by the
systematic use of oil and screens ha vs so destroyed the Insects' breeding
places that now a mosquito I regarded aa a curiosity. There la no rea-
son why Houston. should not attain Ilk results If the crusade t only Inaug-
urated and persevered In. So let us be up and doing.
The health department Ik her for the purpose of promoting the health of
the city and desired Information about health matters will be cheerfully
green. Telephone connection both ph ones No 03.
Th health of ta city I st present remarkably good and we believe that
thl due t the sssssure already adopted. And now It I up to the Individ-
ual cltlsen to de their part so ss to keep the city In as good fa condition as
possible. Th most Important suggestions that w oan make In our opinion
la that th future efforts at sanitation be specially directed to the destruction
of the moequlto. Signed by Dr. J. W. Scott
Dr. W. A- Archer
