Renewal of Talk of Possible War in
the Balkans Had an Influence
' in Chicago Pit.
(Aisociattd Prtu Rrforl.)
CHICACO January il. Political news from
from abroad of a disquieting nature had a
tendency to strengthen the wheat market here
today. At the close which was almost at the
best point of the day. prices were 4 tl H t". c
higher compared with yesterday's close. Corn
alsA closed strong at net gains of sfc to Vtl'4.
Oats firm and provisions steady.
Kenewal of talk of a possible war in the
Balkans seemed to have considerable influence
on the market and was partly responsible for
a recovering of wheat by leading shorts which
resulted in a strong tone during the greater
part of the day. Minneapolis Duluth and
Chicago reported receipts of 104 cars.
Additional purchases of nearly 1 .SO0.0M
bushels of corn by 'he local houses which
supported the market yesterday caused a de-
cidedly strong tone throughout the. entire ses-
sion today. Receipts 334 cars one of contract
grade.
(ats closed firm. Total receipts 113 cars.
Profit taking in January pork had a weaken-
ing effect on provisions but at the close the
market was steady although January pork was
off 33 compared with the previous close. A
SlOc decline in lie hogs inspired some
selling.

Farmen Refrain From Confirming'
Bids Under Top of the Market.
Active Call for Clean.
The rice market continues firm but about
stationary from the latest advance in views.
Quite a number of offerings yesterday were
favored hy good bids but the farmers refrain
from confirming under the lop of the market.
This has curtailed to a certain extent the move
ment of rough but any concession under the
maximum price never fails to move stocks.
All grades of clean are in active call at all
the jobbing centers accompanied by a freer
movement. There is an increasing demand for
export grades of clean. t
