Bits of the Philosophy of Life
In every life there are deep ravines gul-
lies and torrents which the rash man
comes upon unexpectedly attempts to
leap in his haste miscalculates and
falls.
The man of judgment anticipates the
chasm and carefully builds a bridge
upon which he crosses in safety.

President of Texas State Teachers'
Astoeiation Issued Opea Letter
on the Subject.
tHeJten Putt S ft rial.)
CLEBURNE. Texaa. July it R. O.
Hall praaldent of the Texas State Teach-
ers' association has Issued the following
open letter:
Officers of the Texaa State Teachers' As-
sociation; Ladles and Gentlemen: The central
theme for the next Texas 8tate Teachers'
association will be "The Supply of Teach-
ers for Texas Schools." There are about
20000 teachers In the publlo schools of
Texas and of these approximately 6000
quit the profession annually and leave their
places to be filled by new recruits. There
are in our rural schools 13000 teaohers of
whom 10600 have had aot even high
BOhool training. When these and similar
facta are considered. It becomes evident
that this Is one of the most Important
questions that we can consider. It would
be Interesting to know what the differ-
ent colleges of the State are doing to
supply these teachers. What aro our
Slate normals doing? What Is being done
by our city high schools by the summer
normals and by the different teachers' in-
stitutes? It might be Interesting to discuss the
training of teachers with reference to
scholarship morals; social fitness phys-
ical welfare of future citizens professional
skill with a view to departmental teach-
ing with a view to art or music or manual
training or domestic art or dftmestlc
science. Some one will want to discuss
our supply of teachers for high schools
grade work or rural schools. Did you
ever hear of any one deliberately prepar-
ing himself for rural school teaching as
a life work? Nevertheless a very large
per cent of the pupils of Texas are taught
In rural schools.
It might not be a bad Idea to discuss
how the teacher and the position may
best be brought together. This will In-
volve a discussion of the proper work
of a teacher's axeDcy and of the teach-
er's aid department In the colleges.
We are now making efforts to secure
demonstration farms and to teach scien-
tific farming. Do you not think that the
Htate has In Its orphans' home. Its re-
formatory and in its homo for blind deaf
and dumb children an excellent opportu-
nity to run demonstration schools that
would be of great assistance to thost
who are striving after the best results?
Of course you understand that. In mak-
ing programs for your respective sections
you need not follow this central theme
if you find It unsulted to your purposes.
Nevertheless I thought It well to write
you of the plan for the general meeting
and to ask you to conform to the general
plan In so far at you could.
If possible please send me a copy
of your section program not later than
September 1. You will of course also
send a copv of vour profrrsm to Superin-
tendent T. P Brooks nf Ml "bnro. secre-
tary of the nssoclatlnn. at the earliest
possible moment.
