Despite aotaa Bttle bad weather last
week g004 progress was made In cause-
way ;ooastruct1on. The largest part ot
th4 oounty'S .force under Construction
Engineer .Parker Is now at work on the
east or highway side of tlis Qalveatoa-
end of the big structure aod the end ef
the slab protection and the dividing wall
work Is rapldJy approaching. It will re-
quire bat one more move of the mining
plant to Bnlah the original contract
awarded to the A. M. Blodgett Construc-
tion' company after which the matter of
the additional protection on the Galves-
ton and will be taken up. Piling for
this additional protection is now being
made by the Southern Pacific and there
win- be enough ot them ready to drive by
the time the Brat contract Is finished.
Work Is also being pushed en the
fence surrounding the outside wall and
the dividing wall separating the roadway
from the loterurban tracks on the Osa-
veeton and.- this feature belne nractlemJlv

oauseway. .
During ' the week rapid progress has
also bee mad as to paving. Eleven
arches are) now paved or a distance of
nearly eight hundred feet of the thousand-foot
arch stretch. There haa also
been placed a considerable amount of
shell- proteotioir on the highway over the
protected roadway. By the end of the
week the highway will be paved and
shelled from the lift bridge to the Vir-
ginia Point end of the structure.
It is alee stated that by Monday prac-
tically all the duplicate water main will
be in place In-eo far as the mainland
end of the causeway Is concerned. It
has already reached a point to where the
turn to the east to Join onto the line from
Alta Loma takes place and pipe la down
up to the temporary track In use by the
contractors hauling material. From this
point there is a stretoft of about forty
sections of pipe) to be laid to where the
cutoff valve is located. Work of lifting
the grade of the steam roads Is also pro-
greasing rapidly the banks of flllllng be-
ing so placed that It will be but a small
task te change the tracks to the new
grade required. .

GALVESTON. February 14. Trinity
and Brasos Valley locomotive No. "11"
was . the cause of the death of Andrew
Haydu a blacksmith helper shortly af-
ter 0 o'clock this morning while Haydu
wsa crossing the railroad tracks at for
ty-thlrd street and Avenue A.
According to testimony brought out by
the coroner the engine was in- charge ot
William McPherson a negro hostler who
was talcing it from the roundhouse to the
switching crew at the yard office. A
dense fog prevailed at the time which
prevented the engineer In charge from
seeing any object a few feet in front of
his locomotive.
The decendent was 41 years of age

. tie Fifty-sixth -district court this morn
ing a Jury charged with the trial of R. L.
Crenshaw on a charge of murder re-
turned a verdict of not guilty.
Crenshaw was alleged to have killed
John C. Atkins at Bolivar August 13
last year the two men living on ad-
joining farms Atklas coming to 'his
death from a shotgun wound the shoot-
tag being aUeged to have been the re.
ault of family trouble.

arrived In port this morning froia New
York via Nassau. The liner experlenoed
somewhat of a rough passage down the
coast and had a brief encounter with the
norther which passed over Texas an the
30th. Those taking passage to the cabin

were reported today making the record

. A party of five aliens detained at the
marine hospital because of measles since
the arrival of the steamship Brandon -berg
were today released from custody.

ot whom are hospital cases -la addition
to which a party of sixty le held at the
Galveston Immigration home waiting or-
ders from Washington aa to the dispo-
sition of the order of deportation on
grounds alleging labor violations.
