CHILD LABOR LAW VIOLATOR-
That boys under the legal age ar.
among the dead in the St. Paul mine was
proved to his cvn satisfaction today by
Edgar T. Davies. Plate factory inspector.
In one case the child-victim's mother has
apparently lost reason. She Is Mrs.
Charles Howard whose 14-year-old son.
Alfred is "down'' in the dismal mine.
"This case presents clearly a violation
of the child labor law." said Mr. Davies
today. "We are on the track of many
such cases."
Inspector Davies and his assistants wera
denied access to the records of the boys
employed in the St. Paul mine when they
applied for them at the company's office
few days ago.
"We are now making a canvass" said
Vr. Davies. "to learn all we can. We
have discovered a number of serious eases
and will run thera down to fix the guilt

xpected that In some cases the parents
ef the children did not tell the truth about
their ages."

TOR AT GALVESTON.
San Antonio Man Aisnmei Duties
Pending Investigation of Charges
Against . B. Eolman.
Houston Post Special.)
GALVESTON. November 17 E. B. Hol-
man chief Inspector of the immigration
department at the Port of Galveston has
been suspended from office pending an
investigation which is scheduled to take
place November 34.
What the charges are against Mr. Hol-
roan Is not known. The telegram notify-
ing the official of his suspension merely
conveyed that information and gave no
details it being signed by the assistant
secretary of the department of commerce
and labor at Washington. With the re-
ceipt of the telegram came the news that
Frank R. Stone of Sai Antonio would be
sent to Galveston to take charge and the
presence of that official Is expected this
evening.
Inquiry at the office of the Inspector
brings to light no Information relative to
the charges and Mr. Holman himself
states that he has no Idea of what they
refer to. but that he is prepared to meet
them and has asked for an early hear-
ing. Mr. Holman came to Galveston from
New Tork where for many years he was
a prominent attorney previous to becom-
ing connected with the department of
Immigration. He has been in Galveston
for about six years and has been con-
sidered by all to be a most painstaking
official.

SAN ANTONIO Texas. November 17.-
Prellmlnary examination In the case ot
the State of Texas vs. Mrs. Fay Heard
Jones charged with murder on affidavit
of K. J. Pujo. filed In Justice Ben B.
risk a court was formally waived by P.
J. Lewis who represented Mrs. Jones In
tli.it Instance and the defendant was re-
manded to Jail without ball. Mrs. Jones
today stated positively that she fired the
shots which Killed her husband an an-
swer Vto a sensational story based upon
the alleged supposition that someone else
killed Jones.
As long aa the rendition of Mrs. Jones
ccntlnuea to be such that the officers
deem It Inadvisable to confine her In the
jail It la probable that no writ of habeas
corpus will be resorted to. Nothing defi-
nite has been learned with reference to
the exact steps which the defendant will
take. It appearing that no counsel for her
defense has yet been procured. Attorney
1-ewls simply acting until such time as
Mrs. Jones may be able to name counsel.
However public curiosity Is greatly
aroused and this will force a habeas cor-
pue hearing or removal from hospital to
Jail boon. In all probability.
FINGER MARKS ON RAZOR.
Tuesday friends of Nat B. Jones took
impressions of the thumb and four fin-
gers of the right hand of the dead man.
These have been compared with the
thumb and finger prints found on tht
rasor which was picked up In the room
of Jones on the night of the tragedy and
they hve been found not to agree at all
The thumb print on the raxor blade is
r-ot nearly ;o lsre. The some is tiue
if the finder prints cn the opposite sldo
of the blade.
The initials on the gun N. R. J. aid
scratched with some slight Instrument
probably a pin. and the J Is turned In the
wrong direction. The officers argue that
as Jones was an educated man he would
hardly have made that mistake in
scratching his own Initial Is. There are a
cumber of scratches on 'he barrel of tne
gun also. The number has been filed off
The raxor found In Jones' room was
purchased from Paul Mueller 104 West
Commerce street and Is what Is known
as a "Barber's Choice" brand. Accord-
ing to O. H. Alex a clerk In the Mueller
eetabllahment. the man who has charge
of the raxor department this brand of
raxor Is very popular with barbers hut
seldom does the average man who does
his shaving at home purchase a "Bar-
ber's Choice." Mr. Alex made the fur-
ther assertion Tuesday that both Mr.
Jones and his wife were accustomed to
come into the Mueller store to trade tint
he could not recall ever selling either a
raxor. Mr. Alex is the person who sells
all raxors going out from the Mueller
establishment.
The Made of the raxor which was
picked up from under the left arm of
the dyine form of Nat B. Jones by As-
sistant Chief of Police Charles McCabe
the night of the trapedy. shows two very
distinct finger Impressions. The one Is
on one side and is undobutedly that of
a person's right thumb the other Im-
pression is on the other side of the
Made and appears to be that of the light
fore finger.
TO COMPARE WITH JONES' FINGERS
These finger Impressions are being care-
fully preserved by the police authorities
and It Is likely that a photograph will be
taUen so that an unerring comparison
can be made with the impressions uf
Mr. Jones' fingers.
Another very important fact regarding
the finger prints on the blade of the
raxor Is that they disclose the manner
In which the blade was opened. The per-
son who opened the raxor did so as If
opening a common pocket knife by
catching a firm hold on the blade with
the thumb and forefinger. This made the
Impression so prominent on the blsde
that the atmosphere has had a tendency
to corrode the marks of the fingers.
Captain McCabe asserts that when the
raxor was picked up by him It was half
open and he was very careful not to d s-
turb the blade or the very minute blood
stains on the handle as he shut the blade
and put the raxor In Its box.
