' NEW YORK. July 18. Tht Financial and
. Cosuaiireial Chronicle says: Advices to us by
telegraph from the South this evening indicate
that over much of the South little or no rain
has fallen the past week. In some localities
in the Gulf States however it is claimed
there has been too much and that crops are
very grassy. Deterioration of the crop is re-
torted from Texas ss a result of dry weather.

One of Ih most potent factors in shaping
value lower for wheat was. the seeming di-

BUSINESS IS STILL QUIET
Optimistic Indications foi Heavy
Fall Trade Notably High Stock
and Grain Values.
(Associated Preu Report.)
NEW TORK. July 29. Bradgtreefo to
mbrrow will aay: v
Trade Is still quiet as a whole more so.
Indeed. In aome lines than waa the case
last week and quieter even than ordi-
narily at the midsummer period while
cor-ervatlam still governs future opera-
tions by wholesalers and Jobbers and re-
tall or final distribution Is still dlsap-poatlng--
There are however some
nv vements which Indicate a more opti-
mist c outlook in leading; basic lines.
Chief or. these probably Is the sharp up-
turn following a heavy break in the se-
curities markets a recession In sratn
prices following recent advices tending
to point to Detter tnaa recently indicated
weather and grain crop conditions.
Among the industries there are better
reports as to demand tot finished iron
and steel and copper some makes of
cotton r roods based apparently on the
advance in raw materials and In raw
wooL The latter waa sold actively with
fleece grades advanced sliarhtly on good
reports' following the opening of the
light weight woolen goods season by
manufacturers. An Interesting feature
In the reports Is the press af rather less
active demand from manufacturers for
automobile material. In the East cur-
tailment and short time are still marked
In many leading lines notably cottons
woolens leather pig Iron and Jeweiry
manufacturing-. Collections are slow- to
fair. .
Business failures In the United States
for the week ending July 28 were 198
against 215 last week. 22S In the like

Buslness failures In Canada for the
week number forty-one which compares
with thirty-two for last week and thirty-
four for tho like week In 1900.
" Heavier Dry Goods Buying.
(Associated Preu Report.)
NEW YORK July 29. R. O. Dun A
?.' 'Wekly Review of Trade tomorrow
will say:
There" Is no lack of evidence that the
business situation Is much better than the
recent depression In Wall street would
Indicate. A notable Improvement ln
business confidence took place In the lat-
ter part of the week due to recovery In
security prices on advices that much
needed rains wore falling in crop sections
and to the. excellent quarterly report of
the leading steel producer. Buyers are
more numerous In the primary dry goods
market and trading la slightly more ac-
tive for staple prints bleached goods and "
duck. Sales at Pall River were equal tn
a full week's output for the first time
In a number of weeks ' and trading Is
general ln all lines of wool goods. Men's
wear for spring and dress goods have
oeen opened oy a large corporation; or-
ders In plain staple 'worsteds Increased
steadily but 'conservatively. - Tarns are
firmer and ln better inquiry. - Silks In
fancy weaves antt in gray for converting
purposes sell steadily. Shoe buyers still
operate conservatively. ; Footwear values
are again about 2 per cent per pair
lower all around. There is no snap to
leather trading. Large buyers are said
to be short of supplies and though they
operate more or less from hand to mouth
appear desirous of immediate shipments.
Further clearance sales by large Chicago
packers of back salting -hides at about
the prices accepted on previous large
scales have served to Impart a much bet-
ter tone to the domestic aide market.
Hew Orleans Bice Market
(Houston Post Special.) . '

and unchanged on such few Iqts as we

feeerslly asy tone on ' Honduras but the

light supplies available. - Dealers reported a
better inquiry but the demand Was rather sec
tional than well spread over th distributive
territory. Prices were unchanged. - Receipts
