DIAMOND DEALER
BRUTALLY SLAIN
(Continued from Fage One.)
derkirt. at first thought to he a ribbon.
wound around Logue's mouth and neck
aa a gag. caused the police to believe a
woman wan Implicated In the crime. Po-
lice tonlBht Investigated a report that a
woman had beeti u constant visitor on
business to Lopue's office for the last ten
v.ars being; admitted by a secret signal
as the diamond collector constantly feared
burglars and always kept his door locked.
Former Official Told Story.
F. A. Carnal former Prosecntins; At-
torney of Hill .County Montana told the
police he had seen Stratton In the com-
pany of another man In the McVicker
building; where the crime waa commit-
ted during the afternoon. He waa not
positive that Edward Hampton who was
detained with Stratton. was the letter's
companion. 1
Stratton said he had arrived in Chi-
cago yesterday. Hampton declared he
name to Chicago today and was not in
the McVU-ker building.
Attorney Carnal said lie entered the
buildtng by mistake and was attracted to
the two men. One of the men. Carnal
said pulled his rap down over his face
when he noticed he was observed.
Found In Flat.
The quartet were found In a flat at
Wilson and Kvanston Avenues. One of
the women gave the name of Mrs. Ed-
ward Hampton and declared she was the
wife of one of the men prisoners. The
other said she was the wife of James
Johnson alias ' Toronto .Jimmle."
According to t!e records at the detec-
tive bureau. Stratton is one of two pris-
oners who escaped from the Colttmbus
penitentiary August 11 last. He Is al-
leged to be a safe blower. Since being
sent to prison a year ago for safe blow-
ing he has escaped twice the police say.
Several revolvers and a quantity of am-
munition were discovered In the flat
where the arrests were made.
Fought Diamond Thieves.
Ijog'ie Is said to have been respon-
sible for the sentencing of some diamond
thieves to prison In 1905 or 1905 and
police are working on the theory that
they having regained their freedom may
have been Included In the plot.
Seventeen knife wounds were In his
body which caused the revenge theory
to tie advanced. He was also shot In the
right shoulder but the wound would not
have caused death physicians said. His
month was burned with acid and his
skull crushed part of Logue's right
thumb was almost severed. Indicating a
hand-to-hand striiKRle.
Whether rubbery entered into the crime
has not been det'xmined. The office
safe was locked but bloody finger prints
and a bloody rag were found Inside.
Cleap Impressions of the print were ob-
tained and the police hope to prove It a
valuable clue.
I.oKue never carried a very large stock
of goods. He was a Jobber and pur-
chased diamonds and other Jewelry only
as he thought lie saw a ready market-'
for it.
. Immediately after hearing of the mur-
der Chief of Police McWeeny ordered
2i0 extra policemen front outlying dis-
tricts to report to him to aid in the
starch for th. slayers.
Stephen Liolza in years old office boy
ami I-ogtie's employe found the body upon
returning from lunch. When Dolna was

Extensive Business Tour
(Houston Post Special.)
BEAUMONT Texas December 20.
W. A. Prlddle Beaumont manager for
the Continental Lumber Company of
Houston formerly the Beaumont Lum-
ber Company has returned to Beaumont
from a three weeks' business tour
through Mexico. Mr. Prlddle says that
except for portions of Western and
Southern Mexico where the flame of rev-
olution is burning slowly that he finds
conditions in Mexico practically normal
and that the people are attending to
business and going about their every-
day affairs the same as If there were no
revolution in existence. Mr. Prlddle
says that Mexico appears to be enjoy-

ure is that the Mexican railroads are
using a greater quantity of lumber and
