Hayes and Swanson get top
ten in the SLCFort Worth was the sight
of the 1986 Southland Con-
ference Championship
Tournament. For the
NTSU Eagles, it represent-
ed the reason for a season of
hard work. Lamar Universi-
ty led by junior Mike Dug-
ger, was the favorite to take
the SLC crown. McNeese
State University was also a
solid contender. Lamar ful-
filled expectations in the
first round by shooting a
team total 288 and taking a
first round lead. NTSU had
a respectable first day also,
as the Eagles were just five
strokes back at 293. Senior
Brad Hayes and junior Matt
Swanson both had good
days, shooting 70 and 72, re-
spectfully. This score put
NTSU in third place, only
two shots back of second
place McNeese State. The
Eagles improved even more
on the second day as did the
leaders, Lamar and
McNeese State.NTSU came back with a
team low 290, but fell fur-
ther behind as Lamar regis-
tered a 284 and McNeese a
287. In that second round,
NTSU got fantastic play
out of sophomore Greg
Martin who fired a season
low 71. Martin followed
with another 71 on the next
day to help the Eagles to a
solid 292 final round. This
put the Eagles in third
place, finishing 13 shots be-
hind first place Lamar and
only five back of McNeese
State.
Although the '86 mens
golf team didn't win the
SLC or any other tourna-
ment, they were a very com-
petitive team. Individually,
both Hayes and Swanson
finished in the top ten of the
Southland Conference and
Martin and freshman Jeff
Foster showed that they
would be contributors to the
Eagles teams of the future
as well.Senior Brad Hayes hits an iron shot at the NTSU golf course.

of the year, practices his driver on the range.
