In its third season, the women's softball
team makes small waves.Moving
With three seasons of conference play to
its credit, the women's softball team gar-
nered a 15-32 record and a sixth place
conference standing.
"We had a terribly slow start, but we
started peaking at the end," said NT head
coach Dee Edwards. "Unfortunately, we
choked during the conference tournament.
We finished sixth out of seven teams, but
we actually tied with Lamar State Univer-
sity for fifth."
The team went into conference play
with a 0-2 record and lost to UT-Arlington
6-0, 3-0. The next conference tournament
was with with McNeese State University.
NT lost to McNeese, 6-1, 9-6. In the Lady
Eagle's next tournament with Northeast
Louisiana State University, NT lost 8-1,
4-1 and to Southwest Louisiana State Uni-
versity, 5-0, 3-1. Going into the next con-
ference tournament, the softball team had
a 5-24 record. They lost to Lamar State
University, 8-7, 1-2, beat Arkansas State
University, 3-0, 11-10. In the conference
tournament NT lost to McNeese, 3-2 and
to Northeast Louisiana, 5-0.
"Our high point was probably winning
the Maverick Invitational at UT-Arling-
ton," Edwards said. "We also won more
games this year than we did in the last twoup
put together."
Edwards said she thinks the team will
gradually establish good playing habits
and skills. "I think we got a lot of the kinks
worked out at the end," she said. "We
learned several things we needed to work
on. We have learned different ways to
work our skills to perfection."
This was Edward's first season as head
softball coach. Previously, she had been
involved with the volleyball program. "It
was a learning experience for me," she
said. "I had never coached softball before.
Luckily, I had Robin Fry as my assistant
coach. I let her do a lot of the coaching
duties."
The team has been organized for three
seasons, and Edwards said she sees it get-
ting better in the future.
"Towards the end of the season, we had
a lot more unity," she said. "If we recruit
well this year, I think we will do a lot
better this year."

Dee Edwards
Softball Coach
Even though her heart is on the vol-
leyball court, NT softball coach Dee
Edwards is now coaching at the univer-
sity she graduated from.
"I think it is really an honor to be
able to come back to the school I at-
tended and played at for all those
years," Edwards said.
She graduated in May 1984 with a
degree in administrative management.
She was a member of NT's volleyball
team for four years and lettered in all of
them.
"I like softball a lot," Edwards said.
"But my favorite sport will always be
volleyball."
Edwards joined the NT coaching
staff in 1985 as head volleyball coach
and assistant softball coach.
"It was really fun being the volleyball
coach," Edwards said. "A lot of the
girls that I had played with when I was
still in school were still playing. They
made me feel comfortable with coach-
ing. They didn't give me a hard time or
anything like that."
When softball coach Yvonne Hens-
ley resigned, Edwards was named the
new softball coach.
Edwards said she tried to work with
the team in establishing good skills and
being able to work as a team. She let
Robin Fry, assistant coach, do more of
the coaching duties such as practice
work-outs and third base coaching. "I
think it worked out pretty well," she
said.
Edwards said she is not sure about
her future at NT. Will she move along
with her career? "We'll see," Edwards
said.- Dan Karkoska
