school's programsLaBrecque and the
School worked on im-
proving alumni relations.
For example, in the
spring semester they had
an Alumni Appreciation
Day. And the Alumni
Networkers' Committee
concentrated on improv-
ing alumni communica-
tion and involvement with
Dean LaBrecque and the
School.
LaBrecque came to NT
after finishing her Ph.d at
Florida State University,
as assistant professor.
"I was planning to culti-
vate in research but the
administration door
opened and I walked
through," said LaBrecque
who became acting dean
in 1984 and was appoint-
ed dean in 1985.
She still worked with
the graduate students and
the student teachers; but
a lot of time went into ad-
ministering the school's
budget, faculty, propos-
als and paperwork.
"Students who come
here get a lot of personal
treatment; they have a
strong identity. NT has
the strength of a small
university in a large uni-
versity. It's the best of
both worlds," LaBrecque
said.by Wendy Hudson
Weeding through the
departments, the School
of Human Resource Man-
agement made some
changes. Dean Suzanne
LaBrecque guided the
school through these im-
provements.
The School expanded
its programs; but concen-
trated these programs
into three areas, child de-
velopment and home eco-
nomics education, cloth-
ing and textiles and hotel
and restaurant manage-
ment and nutrition. This
reorganizing lead to the
termination of home eco-
nomics and consumer
economics because they
were duplicated at Texas
Woman's University. The
art fashion major moved
to the School of Arts and
Sciences and the early
childhood development
major moved to the Col-
lege of Education.
"We are really special-
ists. Instead of trying to
do everything we concen-
trated on strengths," La-
Brecque said.
Other improvements
included additional schol-
arships for clothing and
textile majors and hotel
and restaurant manage-
ment majors.
