A CHRISTMAS STORY
[Continued from Page One]
wasted. I shall adopt this child
and through him, make myself
of some use in the world.
The child ate a hearty supper
and was afterward put to bed in
Mr. Bob’s own white bed. The
next day Mr. Bob and his
protege went to town. Their
first visit was to the courthouse.
Here the proper authorities were
seen and Mr. Bob adopted
Jimmy. As they were making
their way from the building, Mr.
Bob remarked that he had for-
got something. They went back
and got a paper: Jimmy under-
stood Mr. Bob to say that it was
a license; and a license it was.
Mr. McBride had got a marriage
license for old time’s sake. It
was on the coming night that he
was to have been married. The
day was spent in getting toys
and all manner of goodies to be
sent up to their house. There
was to be a Christmas tree that
night for Jimmy, Mr. Bob and
black mammy.
During their festivities of the
affair a large touring car was
stopped in front of the house;
two ladies alighted, they went to
the door and rang. Mr. Bob
himself answered the summon.
When he opened the door his one
exclamation was, “Helen.” And
it was really Helen and her moth-
er. Without waiting for him to
say more, Helen said, “Bob, I
have been to China and have given
five years of my life for others; I
have returned now to fulfill a
promise I made five years ago.
Tonight I am going to give the
remainder of my life to one man.
Some half hour later a mar-
riage ceremony wTas performed.
When the bridal party left the
parsonage the sky was clear and
overhead the moon shown gently.
The world to this young couple
was bright indeed. —W. D.
