Already well into their respec-
tive seasons, Cherokee County’s
baseball and softball teams are
looking to start strong on the
diamond.
A recap of last week’s ac-
tion:
Lady Eagles 2-0 in district
The lOth-ranked Rusk Lady
Eagles found themselves in
a war with a much-improved
Athens squad, who came into
their game Tuesday at 9-1.
The Lady Eagles overcame a
strong performance from Ath-
ens pitcher Hannah Windham
and scored on a squeeze bunt
in the fifth inning on their
way to a 3-0 win over the Lady
Hornets.
Rusk took on their second
district opponent of the season
Monday night when they met
the Brownsboro Bearettes.
The first three innings started
as a defensive battle, with
Rusk’s Cheyenne Phillips and
Brownsboro’s Madi Timmer-
man dueling on the mound.
With Phillips slowing the
Bearettes down and forcing
them into groundouts, the Lady
Eagle bats woke up in the third
inning.
Rusk notched four runs in the
third and fifth innings on their
way to a 10-0 run-rule win.
Bailee Gates led the Lady
Eagles from the plate, going
3-3 with two doubles and five
RBIs, including the RBI that
ended the game. Tori Choate
finished 2-3 with a double, two
RBIs and a run scored.
Shayla Townsend finished
2-2, while Phillips struck out
two from the mound.
“Cheyenne’s not the biggest
strikeout pitcher, but she
gets us a lot of groundballs,”
said Rusk Head Coach Ash-
ley Renner. “She’s brought a
positive personahty and a lot
of energy to the team. She’s
never afraid when she takes
the mound, and she’s very
coachable.”
The Lady Eagles also escaped
a jam in the fourth inning. With
one out and the bases loaded,
the Bearettes’ Paige Goggans
hit a ball directly to the glove
of Lady Eagle shortstop Juhann
Bowhng. Bowhng then tagged
second base to end the threat.
“There were situations last
year where we would freak out
when we had the bases loaded,”
Coach Renner said. “This year,
we’re more confident in our
defense. We’ve worked on this
and know that it takes nine on
the field, not just one.”
Kelsey Lemus led Browns-
boro from the plate, going 2-2.
Timmerman struck out five on
the night.
The Lady Eagles also took
part in the Hallsville Tourna-
ment this past weekend, fin-
ishing 4-1.
Rusk fell to Hallsville, 3-0,
but defeated Evangel (2-0),
Carthage (5-1), Liberty-Eylau
(15-1) and Van (10-3).
The JV Lady Eagles defeated
Hallsville (10-4) and Carthage
(10-0) over the weekend and
are 2-0 in district after beating
Athens (15-0) and Brownsboro
(13-3).
The Lady Eagles (7-4) travel
to Bullard this Friday.
Eagles 3rd place in Lindale,
win district opener
The Rusk Eagles took part
in tournament action in Lin-
dale, finishing third after a 3-1
record.
In their first game, theEagles
defeated the second-ranked
team in 2A, Sunnyvale, 6-5.
The Raiders took a 5-0 lead,
but Rusk scored five times in
the fifth, to tie before winning
in the sixth.
Josh Raiborn picked up the
win on the mound, notching
three strikeouts. Michael Crews
picked up the save.
Drew Walley went 2-3 with a
runscored, while Vijay Stingley
was 2-3 with two RBIs.
“Offensively, we did just
enough to win and put to-
gether some good at bats in the
fourth and fifth innings,” said
Eagle Head Coach James Dil-
lard. “Defensively, we are still
committing too many errors.
Pitching-wise, we are doing a
good job of throwing strike one,
and when we can do that, we
will be successful.”
In game two, the Eagles
defeated Class 4A Sulphur
Springs, 4-3.
Rusk scored the game-win-
ning run in the sixth inning
when pinch runner Chaston
Bennett stole home to give Rusk
the lead.
“We’re not a team who will
string four or five hits in a row,
so we have to be aggressive and
take the extra base,” Coach
Dillard said.
Reece Goldsberry picked up
the win on the mound with two
strikeouts. Jacob Tyhch got the
start, striking out three and
walking five.
“Jacob and Reece did a great
job on the mound and have re-
ally come on this season,” Coach
Dillard said.
DillonHines finished 1-4 with
an RBI and Houston Munsinger
went 1-2 with an RBI.
In game three, the Eagles
lost to Paris, 6-3, handing Rusk
only their second loss of the
season.
The Wildcats scored four runs
in the third inning off pitcher
Hayden Dewbre’, who took
the loss.
The Eagles tried to come back
in the sixth with three runs, but

Rusk’s Tori Choate is called safe after sliding under the tag of Brownsboro’s Morgan
Barnes during Monday’s softball game. The Lady Eagles defeated the Bearettes, 10-0,
improving to 7-4 (2-0 in District 17-3A) on the year.
kept the Eagles at bay, striking
out nine on the night.
“We struggled a bit off a good
pitcher,” Coach Dillard said.
“It’s tough to win a game when
you strike out nine times.”
Crews led Rusk from the
plate, going 2-4 with a run
scored. Walley finished 1-2
with 2 RBIs.
The Eagles rebounded in the
third-place game, defeating
Pittsburg, 16-6, in a four-inning
run rule game.
Brandon Hamilton notched
the win after a five-strikeout
performance, and the Eagles
helped him from the plate
with nine runs in the first two
innings.
“That was good to see, es-
pecially coming into district,”
Coach Dillard said. “We will
need to continue to swing the
bat well to have a shot at the
playoffs.”
Crews finished 3-3 with
three runs scored and an RBI.
Munsinger went 3-3 with 2
runs scored and five RBI, and
Walley went 2-2 with 2 runs
scored and 2 RBIs.
Austin Ballew and Kody
Stanley each knocked in two
runs, while Michael Pyle added
an RBI.
Coach Dillard said he was
happy as a whole with the way
his pitchers performed for the
tourney.
“We feel, with our pitching
depth, that if a pitcher strug-
gles, we have another one we
feel can come in and bail us out
of a jam and give us a chance to
win the game,” Coach Dillard
said. “We are excited about the
possibilities.”
The possibilities manifested
nicely in the Eagles’ district
opener against Brownsboro.
Rusk picked up the 12-5 win
over the Bears, taking control
early. Walley was the winning
pitcher.
Rusk (10-2) will travel to the
Houston County Tournament
this weekend.
