Blast off! Area youngsters get a taste of NASA life
Steve Swanner and Jared
Flynn, employees at the Hous-
ton National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA)
outreachprogram, presented a
space program for youngsters
participating in the Singletary
Memorial Library summer
reading program.
Area youngsters attended
the event and participated in
the program, which included a
visit to a portable planetarium
and seeing how today’s astro-
nauts live on a space vessel.
Mr. Swanner presented in-
formation on space food and
Mr. Flynn took youngsters on
a voyage in space.
The planetarium presenta-
tion discussed the different
stars in the heavens. Informa-
tion on each of the planets in
the Earths solar system was
discussed.
“Our galaxy has more than
six billions stars,” Mr. Flynn
said. Youngsters were given an
opportunity to ask questions
and to answer questions dur-
ing the presentation. Approxi-
mately 25 youngsters were
taken into the planetarium
at a time.
The outreach program is de-
veloped for students from kin-
dergarten through the ninth
grade. “We take this program
to schools in the Houston area.
Rusk is the farthest that we
have gone,” Mr. Flynn said.
Mr. Swanner said, “NASA
is currently working on a new
capsule called Orion. This will
replace the space shuttle pro-
gram and will be safer riding
on the top of a rocket than in
a shuttle.”
The proposal to create the
Orion spacecraft was partly a
reaction to the Space Shuttle
Columbia accident, the subse-
quent findings and report by
the Columbia Accident Inves-
tigation Board (CAIB) and the
White House’s review of the
American space program. The
Orion spacecraft effectively
replaced the conceptual Or-
bital Space Plane (OSP), which

Astronauts have to eat. Steve Swanner, NASAspace center
employee, explains eating practices on a spaceship.
Regular eating utensils are used to eat dehydrated food
aboard a space vessel. Astronauts add water and the
food is eaten from the container. Food packages stick
to trays with Velcro. Velcro also attaches the tray to the
astronaut’s leg to prevent the food from floating away.
