Lurlene Bowden and five
of her art students presented
the program for Jan. 3 Lions
Club meeting. The fifth and
sixth grade students are Katy
Dickey, Julia Hood, Evelyn
Bowden, Victoria Harper and
Carrie McDonald.
Each told about themselves
and their art work. Some like
to draw animals and others
nature pictures.
Guests at the meeting were
Ulys and Trisha Harper and
Frank Bowden.
Neal Stilley, speaker for
the Jan. 10 meeting, showed
members how to start a fire
by rubbing two sticks together.
The sticks were mesquite
wood and cedar wood. He ob-
tained a smoking spark which
he placed on a bird’s nest to
ignite the flame. He started
several small fires in less than
five minutes.
Sam Marmino presided at
both meetings.

Fund raiser scheduled to
benefit Noel, Brandi Franks
Rusk citizens will host a spaghetti
benefit dinner, bake sale and auction
for the Noel and Brandi Franks fam-
ily at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, in the
community room of Cherokee County
Electric Co-op. They will serve spa-
ghetti, green beans, garlic bread/rolls
and tea for a donation per plate. Take
out boxes will be available as well. A
bake sale and silent auction will occur
shortly after the dinner and everyone
is welcome to attend.
Mr. Franks is suffering from renal
failure and will be forced to use dialysis
or receive a new kidney.
He and his family hoped that a
particular, potential kidney donor
would be able to donate to him but
after extensive testing the doctors
determined she would not be able
to donate.
This prompted Mrs. Franks to go
NEWS
through the same process to see
if she could donate a kidney. Mrs.
Franks, who is the head nurse for Rusk
Independent School District, was a
perfect match. Their transplant date
is scheduled for Feb. 20 of this year.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Franks will be
away from home and work at the
same time, leaving theirthree children
to be cared for by family members
and friends.
Doctors are optimistic about re-
covery time for both. Mr. Franks will
be required to take anti-rejection
medications the rest of his life. Those
could run between $2,000- $5,000 per
month on top of the starting expenses
of the $250,000 transplant.
