A look back from the
Jacksonville fire dept.
By Paul White
Special Contributor
Over the last 12 months,
the Jacksonville Fire Depart-
ment ambulances responded
to 3,413 calls for service. The
fire trucks responded to 1,062
calls for service. These numbers
reflect an average year for the
Jacksonville Fire Department.
We have two
old fire sta-
tions and the
firefighters
have spent a
lot of time this
year painting,
repairing and
generally fix-
ing up both
stations. We
also obtained two new ambu-
lances and hope to replace one
pumper next year.
The Fire Department is in
charge of maintaining the “Kids
Don’t Float Program” at Lake
Jacksonville. This program
consists of having available free
loaner life jackets at the swim-
Paul White
ming area of Lake Jacksonville.
Kids and adults take a lifejacket
that fits them off the peg board,
use it, then, return it to the
peg board. This program was
started as an effort to try and
eliminate people drowning in
the swimming area of the lake.
Historically, someone drowns
every year in the swimming
area of the lake. Since the
program’s inception three sum-
mers ago, no one has drowned
in the swimming area of the
lake. Life jackets to sustain this
program were donated by a life
jacket manufacturer in Tyler.
What I am most happy about
this year is the fact that no one
has drowned in the swimming
area of the lake and there were
no serious injuries sustained by
Jacksonville Firefighters.

Fire Department chief.
Cherokee County posts rosy pre-Christmas
sales tax increases compared to a year ago
The state comptroller re-
leased sales tax information
last week, and the picture in
Cherokee County looks rosier.
During November 2012,
the official launch of the
Christmas shopping season,
retailers rang up sales that
were higher than the previ-
ous year.
Jacksonville, which ac-
counts for approximately 70
percent of all purchases in the
county, logged a 5.03 increase
over last November. The new
sales tax fiscal year began Oct.
1, 2012, and the November
sales are the first reporting
period of the year.
Other cities in the plus
column include Rusk, with a
13.41 percent increase over
the same period a year ago;
Cuney, 89.62 percent and
Wells, 31.45 percent.
The Cherokee County sales
tax was also stronger, tacking
a 6.33 percent gain.
Alto and New Summer-
field posted retail sales that
were lower than a year ago
at -7.74 and -18.48 percent
respectively.
State comptroller spokes-
men say that wide swings in
small communities are not
uncommon. A single retailer
who misses a filing deadhne
can skew the sales tax picture.
State sales tax revenue in
December was $2.17 billion,
up 9.4 percent compared to
December 2011.
“Strong sales tax collec-
tions continue in most major
economic sectors in Texas,”
said Comptroller Susan
Combs.
