I I World AIDS Day on Satur-
JL* JBLday, Dec. 1, and a number
of organizations and agencies in the
Metroplex have planned special events
and activities for Saturday, with some
continuing throughout the week.
The worldwide theme for this year’s
observance is Women and AIDS. In Dal-
las, however, most activities also will fo-
cus on children with the disease. The
Dallas County Commissioners Court ap-
proved a resolution on Tuesday declar-
ing the month of December as Women
and Children Affected by AIDS Month,
and Dallas Mayor Annette Strauss signed
a similar proclamation on Wednesday,
according to Diane Schull, chair of the
Dallas County World AIDS Day commit-
tee. “We expanded World AIDS Day to
include the whole month of December
so we could focus more attention on the
issues of women and children affected
by AIDS. And we’re talking about not
just those who are infected, but also
those who are affected, the caregivers,
the friends, the families of people with
AIDS,” Schull said.
One of the main events scheduled
will be the Ceremony for World AIDS
day set for noon at AIDS Services of

Dallas, 800 N. Lancaster. Schull said the
event will include speeches by a num-
ber of county and city officials, includ-
ing Dr. Gordon Green, head of the Dal-
las County Health Department, Dallas
City Council member Lori Palmer, and
county commissioner Chris Semos. City
Council member Diane Ragsdale also
has been invited to speak, and the final
speaker of the day will be a woman af-
fected by the HIV epidemic. The Turtle
Creek Chorale will perform during the
ceremony. \.
Don Maison, executive director of
AIDS Sendees of Dallas and one of the
coordinators for local World AIDS Day
events, noted that “What we have tried
to do is get the AIDS service providers
to do something collectively, so the bur-
den doesn’t fall on just one agency or
person.” He explained that at the cere-
mony on Saturday, representatives from
a number of AIDS service agencies in
the Metroplex will be on hand to “edu-
cate people on what services are avail-
able for persons with HIV and those
who are affected by the epidemic.”
The theme of “Women and Children
Affected by AIDS” was chosen for Dal-
las’ celebration of World AIDS Day this
year to “dispel the conspiracy of silence
as the threat of the HIV epidemic looms

over 51 percent of the population,” Mai-
son said. He noted that although statis-
tics show that the “overwhelming major-
ity" of AIDS patients in Dallas result
from male-to-male transmission, over
the past few months there has been a
“startling and dramatic rise,” he said, in
the number of women with AIDS in the
county.
Statistics compiled by public health
workers, however, indicate that local
trends in HIV infection differ significant-
ly from the national and worldwide pic-
ture. In Dallas County, female AIDS cas-
es remain a tiny portion of the overall
AIDS caseload. Authorities attribute the
difference to the comparatively small IV
drug abuse problems in the county.
Most female cases of HIV transmission
in the United States result from IV drug
abuse or from sex with males who en-
gage in IV drug abuse.
The latest monthly report from the
Dallas County Health Department indi-
cate that 50 females in Dallas County
were reported to have AIDS. Five of
those cases are among children. There is
a total of 15 pediatric AIDS cases in the
county, and four cases in the 13-to-19
age group.
Nationwide statistics compiled
through October of this year indicate
that 2,686 pediatric AIDS cases and
14,816 cases of women with AIDS
had been reported to the Centers for
Disease Control in Atlanta. The
World Health Organization, the spe-
cialized health agency of the United
Nations, estimates that of the 8 to 10
million people world-wide infected
with HIV, more than 3 million are
women. And according to statistics
quoted at a recent meeting in Chica-
go of the AIDS National Interfaith
Network, AIDS is the ninth leading
killer of children ages 0 to 14, and
rising, and the seventh leading killer
of adolescents ages 15 to 22. A total
of 20 percent of reported cases of
AIDS occur in persons 13 to 20
years old. Those same statistics indi-
cate that at least 50 percent of all
teenagers are sexually active and
that the Dallas/Fort Worth area
leads the nation in teenage pregnan-
