SENIORS
Continued from Page 6
lesbians. At monthly meetings, experts
from a variety of fields brief members
about senior issues and policy.
"I am thrilled our committee has
been charged to bring this issue to the
consciousness of the community," said
York. "It has long been in the back-
ground."
The panel hopes for a broad response
to its widely-circulated survey. Once
surveys are returned, the task force
plans to form focus groups dealing with
individual issues identified as priori-
ties. The committee will present a final
report in December.
Co-chair Armstrong says the impe-
tus for the task force is a generation of
activists who are beginning to get older
and are concerned about the availabili-
ty of services. "They are Baby
Boomers," she said, "looking towards
the world being different, not in the
closet, like so many of them [seniors]
have lived their lives."
Armstrong, an official at the Visiting
Nurse Association, says she already
sees a certain amount of sensitivity and
knowledge about gay and lesbian
issues among agencies serving seniors,
ha the future, these providers will be
dealing with increasing numbers of
gays who undoubtedly will refuse to re-
enter the closet as they grow older.
A recent task force meeting focused
on housing. York said members were
surprised to learn that fewer seniors
than expected were living in retirement
homes.
"We all thought we would end up in
nursing homes," he said. Even so, he
said, the community needs to look at
the issues involving retirement homes,
especially matters related to privacy
and quality of life. "As we grow older,
we don't have the family networking to
support us that often happens in the
heterosexual community," York said.
"Making sure our wishes are carried
out legally once we pass away," is
another issue the committee has exam-
ined, according to York. "Sometimes
people do not complete all of the neces-
sary things in order to pass on proper-
ty." This kind of legal ignorance can be
devastating to partners, family and
friends left behind, he maintained.
The committee invites all gays and
lesbians ages 50 and above in the area.
to participate by filling out a survey.
They are working through the local
group Prime Timers, for gay men, and a
much smaller group, Silver Sisters, for
lesbians. But task force members
emphasized that the survey must reach
beyond those two groups to generate
an adequate level of response. ▼
