A tried-but-true formula
The Jackal shares much with other films of its genre,
but it’s still a taut, well-acted, intelligent thriller
The FBI’s deputy director (Sidney Poitier, rt.) enlists the aid
of imprisoned underground operative Declan Mulqueen
(Richard Gere) in order to stop The Jackal.
By Steve Warren
Contributing Writer
If I had never seen an international
thriller The Jackal would be a good one
to start with. It's taut, crisp, scenic, well
acted and reasonably intelligent. But if
you've seen another thriller you'll rec-
ognize elements of The Jackal, and if
you've seen a dozen you'll be hard
pressed to find air original moment. I
don't mean to discourage recycling,
but...
Of course The Jackal doesn't claim to
be original. Officially it's based on the
screenplay of the 1973 film The Day of
the Jackal; don't ask about the Frederick
Forsyth novel that was based on — it's
a legal thing. But in updating that story
of a plot to kill Charles DeGaulle
they've borrowed from so many other
films that the original is one of the least
of their sources.
The target this time — although the
truth isn't known until near the end —
is the US first lady (Tess Harper). The
hired assassin is the Jackal (Bruce
Willis), who's been tops in his field for
decades and should be able to afford to
retire, even without the $70 million he's
charging for this gig. He's hired by a
Russian who's out to avenge the death
of his brother (sounds a bit like The
Peacemaker) in a joint operation by the
FBI and their Russian counterparts.
The Jackal transforms his appear-
ance totally as he travels. This isn't nec-
essary, as an informant is keeping him
advised of the progress in tracking him
down, but it gives Willis the chance to
wear a variety of wigs of different col-
ors and lengths. Still it's assumed a man
who saw him years ago will be able to
recognize him. FBI Deputy Director
Preston (Sidney Poitier) pulls Irish ter-
rorisTDeclan Mulqueen (Richard Gere)
out of prison to work with them, not
knowing he'd like to get the Jackal for
personal reasons. He fits in well with
the good guys, who include Russian
Major Koslova (Diane Venora), a
woman whose military career has left
her no time for romance. Whatever.
The Jackal travels from Finland to
Canada, then bounces across to the US
a couple of times. On his first trip he
goes to a gay bar in Washington where
he's hit on by Stephen Spinella (Angels
in America, Love! Valour! Compassion!).
He doesn't go home with him or even
say "Call me Jack," but he takes his
phone number and kisses him twice —
on the lips. Later he'll kill him, in a
