Poet Maya Angelou is the keynote
speaker at Saturday’s dinner at the
Anatole Wyndham Hotel.
Peeples added that OLCS uses the
money to pay for programs such as the
gay and lesbian counseling services and
the lesbian programs which receive no
government grant funds, and to make
up the difference when government
grants fall short in the organization's
HIV programs.
The Texas Human Rights
Foundation has been a Black Tie Dinner
beneficiary since the second year the
Dallas Model was instituted, and "We
are eternally grateful for the help they
have given us," said THRF board presi-
dent Hector Garcia.
hr previous years, THRF's allocation
from Black Tie ranged between $5,000
and $8,000, Garcia said, "which is a sig-
nificant amount for us. We operate
down to the bone. We restructured a
couple of years ago to get rid of as
much of the excess baggage as possible,
and that money from Black Tie goes a
long way for us."
In 1996, Garcia said, THRF's portion
of the Black Tie proceeds jumped to
approximately $14,000, thanks to the
organization's efforts to become more
involved.
"We've made a concerted effort to
make our presence known on people's
radar screens, where previously —
because we dealt so often with issues of
privacy — we had tended to fly beneath
the radar," he said. "Now, we're doing
everything we can to make sure people
know we are out there, and we can
help."
From all indications, the Dallas
Model is a formula that continues to
pay off, with co-chairs Vaughn Mock
and Mullino saying the 1997 event —
with 18 local beneficiaries designated
— will be the biggest ever.
Representatives of the local beneficia-
ries said they, too, are expecting big
things this time.
"I am really excited that [keynote
speaker] Maya Angelou will be here
this year," declared Legacy's Wagle. "I
am a huge fan of hers, and I'm sure this
event will be a huge success with her
here." ▼
