Most Idaho voters undecided
about anti-gay measure
Proposition would bar discrimination laws for gays,
prohibit use of state funds to promote homosexuality
BOISE, Idaho — A phone survey by
opponents of Proposition One found
that 59 percent of Idaho voters have not
decided how they will vote on the anti-
gay rights initiative.
The No On One Coalition said
Friday that the remaining 41 percent are
divided almost equally between
supporters and opponents of the Idaho
Citizens Alliance-sponsored measure on
the Nov. 8 ballot.
No On One spokesman Ryan Hill
said the group has called more than
5,000 registered voters statewide during
the past three months.
"We're nervous, but it's better than
if we got it back 60 percent were already
for the initiative," Hill said. "People
aren't just rushing into this. They're
really going to take some time and look
at the issue."
The phone survey, used to help
plot No On One's strategy, is not a
scientifically conducted poll using a
random sample. And Hill conceded that
the figures might not hold up now since
some of the information was gathered a
couple of months ago.
But Hill also said it has been more
than a month since Greg Smith and
Tracy Andrus released their scientific
poll that found Proposition One was
supported by 48.9 percent of Idaho
voters, with 42.7 percent of respondents
saying they opposed it.
At the time of that August poll, 6
percent said they were undecided.
The initiative would ban state and
local laws prohibiting discrimination
against homosexuals. It also would bar
public employees from portraying
homosexuality as acceptable and restrict
library material on homosexuality to
adults.
No On One would not reveal the
exact number of voters called or results
of its survey in various parts of the state,
saying it did not want to provide the
information to the Idaho Citizens
Alliance.
Bill Proctor, an alliance leader, said
he was unsure about the 59 percent
figure. But he agreed that many voters
are undecided.
“I just think there are a lot of voters
who are confused," Proctor said. "Either
that, or people are just unwilling to
commit by phone, that this is so
controversial that they're not trusting
anybody.” ▼
Settlement reached in beating incident
Wilmington, N.C. — A settlement
that includes a $100 donation to AIDS
research has been reached in a lawsuit
filed on behalf of a gay bar patron who
said he was assaulted by Camp Lejeune
Marines.
Lance Cpl. Colin Hunt and former
Lance Cpls. Patrick Cardone and Walter
Watkins were acquitted last year of
assaulting Crae Pridgen and three other
patrons of the Mickey Ratz in January,
1993.
During the trial on assault charges,
witnesses gave conflicting accounts
about whether Pridgen provoked the
Marines and whether they knew the
Mickey Ratz was a gay bar before they
entered.
Under the settlement, the three
defendants did not admit fault but
signed a statement agreeing that
harassment is wrong. They also made a
$100 contribution to the American
Foundation for AIDS Research. T
