Church launches traditional marriage advertisements
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The state’s largest
church is launching an advertising campaign pro-
claiming the union of one man and one woman as
“God’s plan for marriage.”
The ads come as Kentucky voters prepare to
decide on a proposed constitutional amendment
to ban same-sex marriages.
Southeast Christian Church in Jefferson
County plans to run display ads in newspapers,
on billboards and on the sides of buses. It also is
starting to ran commercials on radio and televi-
sion stations and at movie theaters.
“Our goal is to represent the biblical truth of
marriage to our community that affirms marriage
at a time when the traditional definition of mar-
riage is under attack,” said Bob Russell, the
Minister says campaign’s goal is to
represent biblical truth; opponents
say Bible calls for equality
church’s senior minister.
The ads do not mention the upcoming consti-
tutional vote, which would ban civil unions and
bolster state law defining marriage as being
between a man and a woman.
However, Russell said, “We hope that the peo-
ple of Kentucky will vote overwhelmingly in
favor of protecting marriage.”
He said the church plans to continue the ad
campaign beyond the election season as part of a
larger effort to respond to high divorce rates and
other family problems.
Russell said the campaign cost about
$150,000.
A spokeswoman for the group NO on the
Amendment said voters should reject the propos-
al to change the constitution.
The Rev. Brenda Bartella Peterson said the
Bible speaks of the “radical equality of all God’s
children,” which she said should extend to gays
and lesbians.
Peterson said her group is relying on one-on-
one campaigning by volunteers rather than
advertising campaigns.

GLBT ‘Boycott for Equality’ scheduled for Oct. 8
Organizers urge GLBT community to ‘drop out’ of economy that day by
staying home from work, not making any purchases
By Tammye Nash Staff Writer
Dale Duncan and his partner of 10 years were
so angry when President George W. Bush came
out in support of the anti-gay federal marriage
amendment, they decided they had to find a way
to fight back.
What they came up with is Boycott of
Equality, a call for GLBT people around the
country to “drop out” of the American economy
for one day, specifically Oct. 8.
“I think we have the opportunity to have a pro-
found impact on this country and make a very
strong statement,” said Duncan, who is a resident
of Atlanta, Ga.
“But if we are not willing to take this opportu-
nity when we have it, then we deserve what
comes after because we are not unifying as a
community.”
According to the Washington, D.C.-based
public relations first of Witeck-Coombs, the
GLBT community nationwide contributed about
$500 billion in 2003.
If all the individuals making up that communi-
ty participate in the Boycott for Equality, Duncan
said, that would add up to a financial impact of
about $1.4 billion.
Duncan’s proposal has three basic elements.
He is asking GLBT people to take the day off
work, to not buy a single thing that day and to not
talk on their cell phones.
Cellular companies post daily usage statistics,
Duncan said, and a significant drop in those
numbers on Oct. 8 would be a good way to meas-
ure participation in the boycott.
GLBT people “number 27 million in the
United States. There are more of us in this coun-
try than there are people, total, in the whole
