Two weeks ago, reality TV showed one of its
ugliest faces when partners Lew Gallow and
Brad Plumley were voted off “The Complex:
Malibu.” On this “Trading Spaces”-on-steroids
competition. Brad and Lew were clearly the
strongest and most skilled couple.
Eight couples are divided into two teams
to renovate a four-unit condo over-
looking the Pacific. For the first
three challenges. Brad and Lew’s
rooms — a master bedroom, a
bathroom and a guest room —
came in first place. But it was
Brad and Lew’s own shiftless
teammates — sixtysomethings
Barney and Rose, and young
New Yorkers Dave and Ana —
who sabotaged the competition
and stabbed the gay couple in the
back.
“Reality TV just rewards bad
behavior. It’s like putting Jerry
Springer on primetime,” Brad says.
“If we had understood the full con-
cept of the show, we wouldn’t
have been on it.”
In tonight’s episode, as the final
four couples race toward the fin-
ish, it looks like Brad and Lew, as
hired contractors, rescue blond
underdogs Steve and Nicole.
“I can’t really say much, except
keep watching. There’s a surprise
ending,” Brad says.
Brad and Lew — both native
San Franciscans — have been
together 19 years. They now live
in Phoenix, Ariz., and run Flaus, a
retail home store where Lew
designs custom furniture.
They first heard about “The Complex” in April
but missed a local casting call. So they drove to
Burbank, Calif., to audition in person. The cast-
ing agent liked what he saw and in two months
the cameras were rolling.
Brad says for the most part everyone on the
show was portrayed accurately. “But they
refused to show any affection between Lew and
I,” he explains. “We’re not overly cuddly, but
they showed all the other couples in bed each
morning, getting up to start their day. We were

that the affectionate side of being a same-
sex couple never made the cut.

always shown eating breakfast in the kitchen.”
While Brad and Lew didn’t win the competi-
tion, they walked away with their dignity. And
for the most part, they held their tongues about
their malicious teammates. But Brad’s much
more forthcoming during a recent phone inter-
view.
Barney and Rose are “white-trash oppor-
tunists,” he says. ‘They came on the show with
the sole intention of winning at any cost. From
the beginning, they weren’t going to work hard if
