Melissa Grove is executive director of Legacy Counseling Center, a nonprofit agency formed
in 1989 that provides counseling for people with HIV and AIDS. It also provides substance
abuse counseling and operates The Founders Cottage, a licensed special care facility for people
critically ill with AIDS. The majority of clients receive free services. Grove is a psychotherapist
who has been with the agency for 10 years. She opened the AIDS hospice in 1996 and became
executive director in 1999. She grew up in Dallas.
Why did you become involved with Legacy Counseling Center?
I corn! from a family of nonprofit fundraisers. My mother is executive director of a children’s
charity. The reason I got involved with Legacy is that I lost a close friend to AIDS. I took the
position at the Cottage as a tribute to his life.
Why is Legacy Counseling Center important to the community?
1 .egaey can be there for a person from the moment they are diagnosed, hold their hand and
help them through the process. It provides a listening ear and guides them as they make their
way through fife coping with the illness.
How long do people with HIV typically need counseling?
Some people come a couple of times and get back on track. Other people stay with us, return-
ing throughout their fives. If things get really bad for a person and they need much more than
they can get at home, they can come to the Cottage and receive care. Legacy is a supportive net
for them throughout their experience with this disease.
What do people with HIV most need from counseling services?
To me FHV counseling is about dealing with loss. It can be loss of health, loss of what you
thought your life would be, loss of relationships, loss of career and a loss of control. A major
issue we deal with is disclosure. We can teach people and work with them on how to disclose
they are positive. Many people wind up happier than they were before they were diagnosed.
Why is it important to offer substance abuse counseling to people with HIV?
There are a lot of substance abuse problems in our community, and the positive community is
disproportinately affected by it. Substance abuse can be a way of self-medicating. When peo-
ple are under the influence, they’re more prone to behavior that might wind up infecting them.
