AN AMENDMENT
Diownsville P b 181805
EoitoifIiEiuLDsI read with
surprise in your issut of the
16th inst a communication
signed by my worthy friend
Maj Hamner in which he ad-
vocates the distribution among
°
the city poor of the funds be-
ing raised for the purpose of
celebrating Washirigtonabirth
dayThe
The major has a perfect right
to his opinion and I certainly
would have been the hi3t one to
fina fault with it provided he
had kept it to himself But he
has chosen to make it public
through your columns and I
claim the privilege of amending
it through the same channel by
suggesting that he the major
start a subscription in aid of the
poor and 1 venture to say that
nine out of
every ten persons
he will see have already sub-
scribed and are daily subscrib-
ing to sone charitable society
or other and that therefore they
should be left free to subscribe
for any other purpose especial
ly so when it has for an object
besides the diversion of a dance
the nobler purpose of celebrat
ing the birth of The Father of
Ilis Country In conclusion I
say lby all means give the
ball and the sweet echo of
feminine voices answers amen
Yours truly T A Michel
Among snow reports in Sa
turday s issue The IIkrald
failed to mention a brilliant
snow battle which came off Fri
day night at Fort Brown be-
tween Troops G and K The
two troops built fortifications
of snow and had a regular
battle the snow balls flying
furiously for some time It was
iplendid fun and the rarest
sort ever enjoyed on the Lower
Rio Grande
THE SNOW AT THE POINT
Special CorrespntlonccofTce Herald
Point Isabel Tex Feb 15
I thought when I last wrote you
about the weather that we had
seen the worst of it but last
night was worse It began to
snow in the night and continued
until about 10 oclock this
morning It was freezing cold
all the time with the wind
strong from the north drifting
the snow and piling it up in
places until the drifted snow
was deeperthan I care to sa3r
as it might be doubted that it
ever snowed that much as far
south as this Taken all in all
it is the greatest snow storm I
ever saw in South Texas
Travelers coming in from up
river jioints report to have
seen the carcasses of a great
number of dead animals which
were mostly work animals
They say the cause is
these animals were woked
all day and turned loose
at night to feed the best the
could and of course the weather
Was too severe for them to feed
at all
Our farmers are jubilant over
the late freeze and snow as the
forst aiid moisture will loosen
the soil more than any amount
of working could do besides
killing the cut worms and other
pests buried in tho ground
Prospects for a good crop are
better than they have been for
many years past Good times
are coming again

ANOTHER SUGGESTION
Fort Brown Fob 17
Editor Brownsville Herald
Sir I read with much sat-
isfaction in your issue of yes-
terday Major namners letter
suggesting that the funds sub
scribed for the celebration of
Washingtons birthday be used
for the relief of the suffering
poor of the town I heartily
agree with the suggestion
There is a great amount of
abject poverty in the town
which is probably not equalled
by any place of its Size in the
country They are almost link
ed and their guant faces show
how they suffer for food and
how severely they must have
suffered when we know that
during the past ten days the
thermometer has been almost
constantly below freezing point
and with a strong norther blow
Think of celebrating Wash
ingtons birthday in a brilliant-
ly ligthed hall with cheerful
music etc and a bountiful re-
past while outside helpless
fathers and mothers have to
watch their little ones slowly
dying of cold and hunger I
for one could not enjoy such
a celebration
I respectfully suggest as
Major Hamner did that a meet-
ing of the subscribers to that
fund be called that the major
it of all those who attend the
meeting have authority to dis-
pose of the funds and that they
decide whether to use the fnnds
for the original purpose or
honor Washington by giving
the funds for the relief of the
poor as very probably Wash-
ington would do could he be
heard from
Very respectfully
