S.U. Pirates
Have Three Wins
For Five Games
By Bill Barnes
Southwestern’s baseball team i
looking good. They have won three
of the five games they have play-
ed, and they have scored forty-five
runs. Their runs per game average
would be higher than nine had they
not run up against A1 Whisenhunt,
who pitched last year for Indian-
apolis in the AAA league but had
the misfortune to be drafted. Our
Pirates met Whisenhunt at Ft. i
Hood last Monday, and he allowed i
them a scant two runs as the Ft.'
Hood nine walloped the Pirates
14 - 2.
The score does not tell the whole
story. Many factors combined to
spell the Southwestern crew’s de-
feat. They were playing away from
their home field, and under lights
for the first time this season. Whis-
enhunt was not the only profession-
al to grace the Ft. Hood roster.
Pounds, the catcher, played a num-
ber of games for the Washington
Senators; the centerfielder. Duffey,
has played pro ball; Willie Wil-
liams, the lively shortstop and
spark plug of the Hood team, play-
ed for Rochester.
Overall, the Pirates did not do
too badly. Although they struck
out sixteen times, they also col-
lected twelve hits. Twice
they loaded the bases with no outs,
but both times the runners wither-
ed on base. The cloud that hid the
sun was the reason for appalling
number of errors, which accounted
for about fifty per cent of their
opponents runs.
On Thursday, April 2, Southwest-
ern defeated the Huston - Tillotson
Rams 8 - 11 in Austin despite a
baffling set of ground rules. Time
and again the umpires’ frustrating
calls almost led to rhubarbs. Typi-
cal was the occasion when the
Rams had a runner on third. The
hatter hit a ground ball to the in-
field which was fielded and thrown
in to catcher Hibbetts who tagged
the runner out. Hibbetts then re-
layed the ball to first, the batter
having run half way down, then
stopped to watch the play at home
plate. * The official ruled “safe”
even though the runner failed to
reach the base before N the ball.
“Unh uh,” he grunted. “Youse hat
tuh tag ’im.”
The Rams threatened in the ninth
inning. But with the bases loaded
and two outs, Dale Lusk relieved
Del Mogerg on the mound and
struck out the batter to retire the
side.
It was a bitter cup for ITuston-
Tillotson, who was seeking revenge
for the 17-1 shellacing they re-
ceived in Georgetown last March
24.
Yes, the Pirates are looking good
this season. If you like baseball,
get yourself a camp stooP or an
apple box to sit on and come on
out and watch the home games.
Chances are you’ll not be disap-
pointed.

JERRY STRICKLER
Local tennis talent, is one of the
top players on the Southwestern
Tennis Team. (See story.)
Strickler, A Featured
Player of Tennis Team
Southwestern’s tennis team con-
tinued in the win column by de-
feating St. Mary’s of San Antonio
here on Kurth Tennis Courts last
Saturday. Southwestern lost only
one of thirteen sets in blanking the
visitors 6 - 0 for our team’s seven-
th victory. An encouraging num-
ber of fans watched the match,
lending their inspiration and sup-
port to the players, and were re-
turned with fine exhibitions from
both teams.
In the number one singles Jerry
Strickler defeated Joe Segovia 6-3,
5- 7, 6-3, in a closely played contest.
David Watts downed John Swent
6- 3, 6-3. Steve Jackson won over
Roger Rodriquez 6-0, 6-3, and Har-
old Brooks defeated Rich Grana
6-3, 6-0.
Strickler and Nefl Abeles com-
bined in the number one doubles
to take Segovia and Rodriquez 6-4,
6-1. Brooks and \tyatts followed suit
with a 6 - 2, 6 - 0 victory over
Swent and Grana.
Next action for the team will be
a return match with St. Mary’s in
San Antonio.
Pictured first today, in a series
of pictures of the team members,
is Jerry Strickler, a drama major
who may be better known for his
activities on the Mask and W i g
stage than on the tennis court, but
who has proved equally capable in
both places. Having played with
Baytown High School, which has
won seven state championships in
recent years, Strickler has the po-
sition of number one singles which
means that he plays the best the
visiting team has to offer each
time. Proof of his ability is that in
seven matches he has lost only
once. Strickler likes to play a
steady game with a cool head and
to let the other fellow make the
mistakes. So far this, policy ha:
been successful, and Strickler has
made a big contribution to the
Kappa Sigs Lead
Intramural Baseball
Kappa Sigma defeated Phi Delta
Theta Monday to take the lead;
and are now the only undefeated
team in intramural baseball. Led
by home runs by Redding, Howell,
and Thornton, the Sigs bombed the
Phis by a score of 10 - 1. The
real story, however, lay in the
pitching, as Dick Oliver pitched a
1 hitter at the Phis and looked like
far and away the best pitcher jn
Intramurals again. The Sigs got
their ten runs on ten hits.
PHIS DEFEAT INDEPENDENTS
The Phis defeated the Indepen-
dents by a score of 9 - 3 last
Tuesday. The Phis big second inn-
ing helped them to their victory as
they scored 5 runs. A1 Munson hit
a home run for them. The Phis
got their 9 runs on 8 hits and the
Independents got their runs on no
hits.
PIKES DEFEAT INDEPENDENTS
Pi Kappa Alpha defeated the In-
dependents by a score of 14 - 13.
(This score could be wrong as the
score book was very poorly kept*.
The Pikes also defeated the KAs
by a score of 15 - 12, giving them
a very commendable Record of 2
wins and 1 lds/r ior -4he season.
TEAM STANDINGS \
Kappa Sigma won 2, Lost 0;
Phi Delta Theta won 2,\ Lost 1
