Set For Beauty Review
Twenty-four girls were selected
by their social organizations to vie
for the title of “All School Beauty”
in the forthcoming Beauty Review
on Saturday, October 13.
The nominees are: ALPHA DEL-
TA pi - Willeda Cox, freshman,
San Antonio; Kay Dean, freshman,
Navasota; Rose Nixon, senior, Cor-
pus Christi; and Janis Payne, fresh-
man, Austin.
DELTA DELTA DELTA- Linda

Dropping in for a brief visit on
the campus October 4 was Lt. C.
E. Woodbeck, Public Information
Officer for 4th Armored Aviation
Company, Ft. Hood. He came by
way of helicopter, landing in the
shadow of the University field
house.
An ex-student of Southwestern,
Woodbeck was in the C-5 program
on the campus in 1945. His mission
to the campus today was to get
some credits verified. Lt. R. C.
Hubbard was the pilot.
The 40-mile trip from Ft. Hood
to the campus was made in approx-
imately 35 minutes, 10 minutes
longer than the normal flight would
have been. They had to fly around
a storm.

The judging will be done in pri-
vate on Friday, October 12, and the
winners will be kept secret until
the presentation. Following the re-
view', a semi-formal dance honor-
ing the winners will be held in the
gym.
The committee for the Beauty
Review' is composed of Dean Joan
Smith, Mrs. Wier, Mr. Springer,
Mr. Valone, Patsy Puested, Rose
Nixon, Wayne Zimmerman, Buddy
Dunn, Nancy Carter, and Stanley
Brosette, chairman.
Digest’s 41,000 Dollars
Offered Students and Profs
The Reader’s Digest is offering
$41,000 in cash and scholarships as
prizes in an October contest open
only to college students and faculty
members in the United States.
First prize is $5,000 in cash with
another $5,000 to the scholarship
fund of the winner’s college. Second
prize is $1,000 cash with an equal
amount to the school’s scholarship
fund. There are ten $500 cash prizes
-With art, equal amount to scholar-
ship funds.
There will be 100 prizes of $-10 in
book credit from local college book
stores. The best entry from each
college will receive an additional
$10 in book credit.
- On blanks available at college
book stores, entrants simply list in
order the six articles which they
| consider the most interesting in the
October issue of Reader’s Digest.
Those with listings closest to the
results of a survey of Digest read-
ers will receive the prizes.
Entries must be postmarked be-
fore midnight of October 25 and
addressed to the Reader’s Digest
Contest. Box 4. Great Neck, L. I.,
New York. Entries will be judged
by O. E. McIntyre, Inc.
The "October issue of the maga-
zine includes an article by Howard
Whitman urging contributions to
scholarship funds in lieu of flowers
at funerals and an account of the
success of the Fund for the Ad-
vancement of Education’s program
for admitting brighter boys and
girls to college two years earlier.
The Reverend James William
Morgan, pastor of the Jefferson
Methodist Church of San Antonio,
will be the preacher at the Fall
Preaching Mission to be held at
Southwestern T uesday through
Thursday, October 9-11.
This Reverend Morgan was for-
merly the pastor of the First Meth-
odist Church of Georgetown.
The times and topics of the ser-
vices, to be held in Lois Perkins
Chapel, are as follows: Tuesday,
11:00 a.m., “The Great Invitation’’;
7:30 p.m., “Can I Be Good?’’; Wed-
nesday, 11:00 a.m., “Being Good
the Easy Way’’; 7:30 p.m., “Disci-
pline Is a Dirty Word”; Thursday,
11:00 a.m., “God Calls—Man Res-
ponds’’.
Additional activities held in con-
nection with the preaching series
will be sponsored by the Student
Christian Association, with the co-
operation of other student groups.
An informal reception in Morgan's
honor will be sponsored by the SCA
immediately after the Tuesday ev-
Freshman Elections
This week the freshman class be-
gan its election of class officers.
Butch Winters was elected to the
vice-presidency, and Bette Wilson
was elected secretary-treasurer.
There will be a run-off for the
fresman senatorial seat, and for the v
presidency of the class. Jim Carlin
and Don Bouldin are in the run-off
for the presidency, and Nan Ken-
nedy, Morris Locen, and Pat John-
son are in the run-off for the Stu-
dent Senator.
German Club
Views Slides
The German Club of Southwest-
ern University held its first meet-
ing of the school year at the home
of Major Martin, last Wednesday
night. After a short business meet-
ing, refreshments were served.
The meeting was then turned
over to Robbie Sledge who present-
ed a series of slides on the Isen-
heim Altar painted by Matthias
Grunewald. The painting of the Is-
enheim Altar was painted for the
church in Isenheim in French Al-
sace.
Sledge explained the artistic val-
ue of this piece, considered one of
the greatest works of art. After the
program the meeting was adjourn-
ed. There were forty-four German
students present.
The officers for this year are;
Henry Hamil, president; Frank
Rodden, vice-president; Ann Melu-
gen, secretary-treasurer; and Dale
Frazier, reporter.
Meetings of the German Club will
be held regularly on the second
Wednesday night of each month at
7:00. All former German students
and students who are presently tak-
ing German are incited to attend
these meetings.

ing the summer to give the Student

upon the recommendation of Dr.
Finch. The spending of the money
is subject to the approval of Dean
Berglund.

Vesper services featuring the
Reverend Morgan will be held in
Mood Hall at 10:00 p.m. Tuesday
evening, in Laura Kuykendall Hall
at 11:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, and
in Martin Ruler Hall at 10:00 p.m.
Wednesday evening. An all-school
communion service will be spon-
sored by the SCA Thursday night
at 10:00 p.m. in the chapel.

views and meals with the Rever-
end Morgan may be arranged
through Gordon Roe.

The members of the 1956-1957
Southwestern University choir have
been selected, announces John D.
Richards, director of the 44-mem-
ber group.
The widely-known singing group
will soon begin a tour of Texas
towns.

Fire Strikes
Patrick Home
MEGAPHONE EXCLUSIVE
Fire struck the home of Dr. and
Mrs. John Patrick last night afc
11:00 p.m. The fire started in the
bedroom of Mike Patrick, age nine,
when his bed lamp shorted out as
he was sleeping.
Mike woke up saying that he was
hot and thirsty. He wandered out
of the room just as the bed and ad-
jacent wall burst into flame.
Dr. Patrick had the fire under
control by the time the George-
town Volunteer Fire Department
had arrived. The fire destroyed the
boy’s room, and there was exten-
sive water damage from seepage
in the dining room, below.
Several SU students were among
the volunteers.
