The living exhibits ot the
Aquarium are designed to give visi
tors the sensation of gradually im
mcrsing deeper into the waters ot
the (in 11 of Mexico as they become
undersea explorers experiencing
the many interactive displays that
reveal the mysteries beneath the
waters of the Gulf ol Mexico.
From the shore to the deep wa-
ters and back again, visitors are
treated to interactive experiences
w ith plant and animal life presented
m their natural environments
Located on the southernmost tip
of Corpus Christi Beach in the
shadow ol the Harbor Bridge, the
Aquarium features hundreds of spe
t ies, ranging from invertebrates to
the higherorderol animal and bony
fishes displayed in intricately re-
produced habitats representing the
ecosystems ol the Gulf. These habi
tats include "Marsh. Dune and Bay
the Estuaries." with a dramatic slice
through a harrier island dune; and
"The Shoreline Comes Alive: Am
mals ol the Texas Coast." with its
Sea Star Discovery Pool w'here visi
tors can touch the mysterious and
intriguing marine animals which
inhabit the waters of theGulfCoast
"Shaping the Boundaries: The
Barrier Islands " includes an inter-
active video that allows visitors to
become a mayor and issue the
evacuation procedure as a si mu
lated hurricane threatens the coast,
ami in "The Flower Garden Coral
Reel." visitors will see a recreation
of a rare phenomenon known for
its beauty, nourishing coral and
marine life
The exhibit “Islands of Steel:
Oil and Gas Platforms" highlights
the Aquarium's largest tank with
132.000 gallons. “Ocean Technol-
ogy and Mariculture" focuses on
the technology of the deep-sea ex-
ploration and research and “The
Nearshore" depicts the crowded
jetties and the Seven and One Half
Fathom Reef
"The Wonderful World of
Sherman's Lagoon" is a three di-
mensional graphic and interactive
display m vivid cartoon color that
brings to life the stars ol Jim
I (Hiiney's cartoon strip. "Sherman's
l agoon Sherman the shark and
Ins triends guide visitors through
the exhibit, teaching them about
lagoons, barrier reels and the for
mation ot coral atolls The exhibit
contains a Warm Water Reef La
goon tank and a Cold Water Tidal
Pool tank featuring animals such as
anemones, tropical lish, corals anil
starfish from the Pacific < H'ean and
the Pacific Northwest coastline.
Sherman helps answer frequently
asked questions about sharks and
iheir habitats and through an enter-
taining video interview. Toomey
will provide some insight into the
fascinating life of a cartoonist

turtle habitat and will also cvcntu

to the Aquarium's outdoor rehabili

The Aquarium is operated by the
Texas Stale Aquarium Association,
a nonprofit, self-supporlinp orga
nt/alton established in 1478
Admission fees are $8 for adults
17 years and older. $4.75 for chil
dren 12-16. years. $4.50 for chil
dren 5-11 years, children 4 and
under arc admitted free. Scniorciti
/ens 60 years and older and active
duty military are admitted for $5.75
The Aquarium is handicapped
accessible, it has elevators and
wheelchairs available for use by
the handicapped. Strollers are per
nutted in the Aquarium and a few
arc available at no charge.
The Aquarium is open Monday
through Saturday from 9 a m to 6
pm. and on Sunday from 10 a m
to 6 p m It is closed Christmas
Day.
