PARR team takes world championship

Tournament sponsored by the Inter-
national U^t Tackle Tournament
Association I ok 26-28.
The 58th annual tournament was
held in Puerto San joae, Guatemala.
Tbe championship anglers were
John Price of IVxt Aransas, team
captain and winner of the High An-
gler award; Dale Schroedrr of Port
Aransas and Port Lavaca, and Hoyt
\V hidbee. a former Port Aransas res*
dmt w ho now resides in Kenrville.
The tournament was attended by
>4 anglers who represented teams
from South Africa, Costa Rica, the
Netherlands Antilles, Guatemala,
Puerto Rico, the IXiminican Repuh
lie and the United States.
The PARR team released 32 sail-
fish to claim the championship, fol-
low edbv a Guatemalan team with 29
sails, and a South African team with
25 sails.
Price released 16 sails to claim the
High Angler designation. Second
High Angler w ith 1 5 sails was Carlos
Zaid of Guatemala, and third High
Angler was Joan Vernon, of the
International Women’s Fishing As-
sociation, with 12 sails.
Two other Texas teams in the
tournament included Port Aransas
members. They were the PARR II
team of Pete Fox and Hal Tompkins
of Port Aransas, and Franz Hoffman
of Guatemala; and the Texas Tour-
nament Anglers Association team
with Bill Gavit of Corpus Christi,
Robert Veselka of Port Aransas and
Dan Heil of California.
The championship PARR team
was awarded the Big Belt, a deco-
rated fighting belt presented eight
years ago by the late Lynn Gavit of
Port Aransas who had it made for the
association when he was president. It
replaced the first belt which was
retired after 50 years. The first belt is
12 feet tall and is on display at the
International Gamefish Association
Museum in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Aransas until June 1999 when it wifi in Cabcz* de Toro in the Dominican

When the Emergency Medical Services Auxiliary opened its
new resale shop on Tuesday, March 3, the ribbon was cut by
Port Aransas Mayor Jim Sherrill, center. The shop is in Northgate
Mall on Cutoff Road at Channel Vista Drive. The shop is open
from 10 a m. until 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday with all
proceeds from sales going toward purchase of equipment for
EMS. The effort was spearheaded by Nettie Mayfield and Lucy
Jones During the ribbon cutting ceremony, a crowd of prospec-
tive customers looked on.

Monday, Feb. 23
• At 3 45 am, a deputy assisted a
city unit at a disturbance call on
Access Road 1-A
Tuesday, Feb. 24
• A deputy and city unit reported they
were out of their vehicles at 5:08
a m because of an open door on
Alister Street. The building was
secured.
Wednesday, Feb. 25
• A deputy assisted a city unit on
traffic at 1 45 a m. One person was
arrested on a warrant.
• At 8 a m., a deputy executed an
arrest warrant on Sandpiper Circle
• A deputy took a burglary of a
vehicle call on Cotter Street at 1:25
p.m.
• A deputy executed an arrest
warrant at 4:34 p.m. on subject in
Victoria The prisoner was
transported to Port Aransas.
Thursday, Feb. 26
• A deputy took a theft report at 8:40
a m. in the office
Friday, Feb. 27
• A deputy responded at 12:25 a m.
to a call in the flats, where on subject
was arrested for public intoxication
and a warrant.
• A deputy responded at 6 16 p.m
to a civil disturbance on Cut-Off
Road
• At 7:17 p.m., a deputy assisted
Emergency Medical Services at a
convenience store on Avenue G.
Saturday, Feb. 28
•At 10:56 pm., a deputy responded
to the beach north of Access Road
3 in reference to a bonfire Eight
subjects were arrested: five for
being minors in possession, two for
making alcoholic beverages
available to minors; and one for MIP
and for being a minor in possession
of tobacco.
Sunday, March 1
• A deputy assisted a city unit on
Beach Street at 11:20 p.m. in
reference to a theft The city made
two arrests

Tuesday, Feb. 24
• A distress call was received by
Naval Station Ingleside about a
possible heart attack victim on
board the Navy Snip USS Pelican.
Coast Guard 41386 along with the
rescue helicopter diverted from
training to assist and pick up the
victim. He was transported to meet
an ambulance. Time spent on the
incident: 27 minutes.
Thursday, Feb. 26
• The station received a call from a
concerned individual regarding a
vessel that was late. At 2 a m., the
Coast Guard’s 213520 along with
the rescue helicopter, located the
stranded vessel and took the
boaters to safety. Property saved:
$ 12.000 Time spent on the incident:
6 hours, 22 minutes
Saturday, Feb. 28
• The station received a call from a
fishing vessel that had lost power
in the middle of Aransas Bay. The
Coast Guard contacted a
commercial salvage company that
got underway immediately and
towed the by then grounded vessel,
to safety Property saved: $18,000
Time spent on the incident: 3 hours.
