Fine festival
Last week s second annual Celebration of Whooping Cranes
and Other Birds has been called extremely successful. Hun-
dreds of people attended the four-day event. Scenes from the
festival, clockwise, are Dr. George Archibald, founder of the
International Crane Foundation, who was one of the keynote
speakers. At the Birding Center, bird watchers and Port Aran-
sas resident Bob Fisher look out over the water. In photo, top
right, Myra Taylor of Port Aransas gives a presentation on
identifying shells At right is Walter Giesen of San Francisco,
who impersonates John James Audubon. Giesen presented
his program on Friday, Feb. 27, at UTMSI and for students at
both the elementary and middle schools. He is shown speaking
to fourth and fifth graders about Audubon's life and travels. The
lower photo was taken at the trade show, where vendors
offered products dealing with birds, birding and nature.

of the group’s current production,

WIC mobile clinic due Monday
The mobile clinic from the WIC
program will be in Port Aransas for
the first of its twice-monthly visits on
Monday, March 9.
The clinic will be at the Family
Center IGA parking lot from 9; 30
a m. to 4:30 p.m. It will return Mon
day, March 16, when it will he at the
same location from 9:30 a m to 3
p.m.
The Women, Infants and Chil
dren (WIC) Nutrition Program is a
federally funded health and nutri
tional program designed to improve
the diet of pregnant and breastfeeding
women, infants and children. If pro
vides nutrition education, vouchers
for healthy foods, information for
women who ch<x>se to breastfeed,
individual nutrition counseling, im

munizations for babies and children,
and referral to other helpful pro-
grams.
WIC is lor pregnant, postpartum
and breastfeeding women, and for
infants and children up to age five. It
is op»en to many people from working
families, military families, single par
ent families and mothers who receive
Medicaid benefits.
In addition to meeting the age and
condition requirements, applicants
for WIC benefits must have one or
more nutritional health problems as
determined by a nutritionist or health
professional at the WIC clinic; fall
within income guidelines or he a
current participant in Medicaid, Fo<xl
Stamps or Aid to Families with De
pendent Children (AFDC); and live
in the county where they seek ser
vices. Participants do not have to be
legal residents of the United States.
WIC foods supply significant
amounts of protein, iron, vitamins C
and A, calcium and other nutrients
which are needed in increased
amounts during px-riods of rapid
growth such as pregnancy and early
childhood. WIC provides vouchers
for milk, cheese, eggs, cereal, beans,
peanut butter and infant formula.
Income requirements range from a
one person household with a gross
(before taxes) monthly income up to
$ 1,21 7, to a household of six people
with a gross monthly income up to
$3,314. Each additional family $420
