DRUM RUN ON
As the last issue of
SOUTH JETTY was going to
press, we got the word
that the first big catch
of drum had been boated
from the Ship Channel on
Kenneth Reiter's party
boat Pelican. And since
then, there have been a
number of good catches,
especially from around
Markers 7 and 13.
Shown in the photo are
Ike Eisenmenger and Jack
Frazier, of San Antonio,
with their catch from
last Saturday. The fish
average about 40 pounds.
A real bright spot re-
garding the Liberty Ship
Reef off Port Aransas. We
have word that there has
already been a good catch
of sow snapper and group-
er from the one ship that
is in place some 18 miles
Bear With Us
SOUTH JETTY is devel-
oping a new look, and
this isn't it. We are
in the process at Mission
Press, our recently ac-
quired Corpus Christi
printing plant, of making
the big move from lino-
type to new, modern pho-
tocomposition equipment.
And quess what, the new
machines didn't arrive
on time, and probably
won't be available for
even the upcoming issue.
So here we are, using our
IBM Selectric typewriter,
setting pages in your pa-
per .
We think you will like
the new look, and we know
we will like not setting
everything in metal type.
So, please bear with us.
Sometimes we need to take
a small step backward be-
fnr-o a niant sFed forward
off Port Aransas. The
other 2 ships that will
complete the reef are
still scheduled for sink-
ing this month. It sure
didn't take long for one
ship to draw some fish.
PA Lab Head
Honored
Dr. Connie Arnold of
the National Marine Fish-
eries Service Port Aran-
sas lab has been named
"Professional Conserva-
tionist of the Year" by
the Texas Outdoor Writers
Association. The title
was conferred on Arnold
at the TOWA meeting in
Austin, Jan. 24, where
Arnold was keynote speak-
er briefing the state's
outdoor press on his a-
gency's work in artifici-
al spawning of marine
sport fishes and tagging
of Gulf fish.
Arnold pioneered work
at the Port Aransas lab
in the artificial propa-
gation of game fish such
as redfish and trout. His
work promises to open the
door for biologists and
mariculturists to produce
and rear vast quantities
of the fish in labora-
tories .
Arnold, an Oklahoma
native, received his BS
and MS degree at South-
west Texas State in San
Marcos and a PhD in chem-
ical oceanography from
Texas A&M University.
Prior to assignment at
Port Aransas, Arnold
worked at the National

Narrangansett, Rhode Is-
land, where he did re-
search on the spawning of
several species of fish,
including the flatfish
and cod.
Dates To Keep
In Mind
I March 12—Fish & Game Dinner
1 March 18-21—Garden Club Sale
April 3 — City, School Board &
W ater District Elections
July 7, 8, 9 — Texas Champion-
ship Billfish Tournament
j July 12. 13. 14, 15 — Deep Sea
Round-Up
July 24, 25 — Outboard Fish-
ing Tournament
But it was at Port A-
ransas where Arnold, as
officer in charge and re-
search biologist, manipu-
lated light and tempera-
tures to get trout and
redfish to spawn year
round in labs. By set-
ting up a period of per-
petual summer, Arnold had
speckled sea trout spawn
some 80 times from mid-
April to mid-May, an av-
erage of one spawn every
four days.
In August 1975, such
light and temperature
manipulations were suc-
cessful in spawning red-
fish. And during the
following three months,
Arnold, working with
Farks and Wildlife De-
partment biologists, pro-
duced 52 spawns from six
adult redfish resulting
in 75 million fertilized
eggs. Tens of thousands
of redfish were reared
from a portion of the
larvae to be used in re-
search and stocking in
both fresh and salt wa-
ters of Texas.
